upwards of 8"......word of warning to those who use ayc an u don't seal it,,,the heart wood /sap wood/ pitch will bleed through the primer an paint an bubble the clear coat. that's if u own the plug long enough..

CS, thats the shape I like to make too. I find I like large needles and heavy because I cant always feel them when working it in the water. Those are real nice
The sanded eye thing is cool too

Cape are the bottom three ayc, looks just like pine? Are you still using Kilz for sealer? water base or oil? Been using oil base and it takes a long time to dry.

capesams
10-06-2003, 07:32 PM
top one is birch,,bottom r ayc.....I've changed over to oil, I'm finding laytex anything just lifts off in no time,,,oil is slow drying , but I think it'll last a bit longer......anything that drys fast doesn't get a chance to soak in an grab. think way back when ,,when they had nothing around but oil,,an how the old plugs got beet an the paint for the most part is still stuck on,,they also had lead in the paint that made it last an last....that's my thought's anyway .

Cape i agree with you on the oil based paints, thats all i use it holds up well. an old timer up on the cape makes a similar shaped needle, it casts amile and catchs. i think his name is George Calizone. from what i hear he is in his late 80's. also makes a nice small pencil.

Where are you weighting these? I have been drilling, gluing in slugs and filling with wood filler to keep the weight balanced front to back, and to keep a lower center of gravity to keep the plug hook down when I retreive. I prefer to drill from the butt but find that doesn't work for me for needles the way it does for pencil poppers. Nice shape! I always liked the Super Strike needles.

I,ve been drillin the butt end useing the egg sinkers ..first put a peice of wire through the plug, then slide the sinker on, 2 drops of glue, let harden,,,then when your ready to finish the plug all the holes r lined up, even the tail grommet slide in with no trouble................don't know how hab's does it....haven't got the chance to cut up the plug yet:devil: :hihi:

Move the front hook farther up....Afterall, stripers hit their prey from the head...Unless of course your intention was another bluefish popper......Put 4/0 Treble in place of 3/0...Plug actually swims better but is still butt heavy......Take comments as you wish.....I put them in 3 different hands and we pretty much all agree.....Fit and finish is exceptional. You need to come out and fish the suds bud and fine tune those.....:fishslap:
As for pics.....It's kinda like bananas.....Just do not take them or camera along.....Bad mojo....Plus don't want to light up the beach at nite and scare away what I have been waiting several hours for.....That's for internet heros....:bsod:

I can't wait until I can make the pink needlefish like you. I live in a very small apartment. Anyone want to sell me a body of a swimmer or needlefish in 2oz?

I am new to plug making. I just learned how to tie a sandeel fly.

:ss: Heading to a Striper run!
