I get a ton of pop-up ads and sometimes it kicks me offline because there are so many trying to popup. Is there something I can do about this?

Never in your life click the X within the pop-up add.

Most pop-ups are slimy and that X is PART of the actual LINK. So when you click the X you are actually activating more popups.

Just look at your task bar at the bottom of the screen and RIGHT CLICK the Pop-Up identification there and choose CLOSE.

The spammers are smart, they want you to click the X because that X is part of the pictures which goes to the link they want you to anyway.
