Got Stripers

Bill & Jul's did you get in any scouting this weekend? Anything worthwhile to report? I've been working in the yard for 2 weeks and I feel like every muscle in my body is ready for therapy. I'll be heading down to my usual spring haunt tomorrow, largemouth, pickeral, crappie, sea run browns and yes there should be some herring running to hopefully lure in some big largemouth where the herring come in. Back in the late eighties, I nailed a 9.2, 6.5, 5.5 and 4.4 in about 20 minutes with a blue/black jig-pig all within about 40 feet of the herring run.

I'd would however prefer the striped variety, but with the late start I'm thinking 2nd week of may out of Scituate...my usual launch site. Maybe a cape trip with the Juls-Bil team, when is that mistery trip and is anyone welcome? Today sure felt like spring and if this weather continues, it won't be long till things start jumping.

What about you John, you hitting anything down your way or just small holdovers still. I'd say let's launch the boat, but I'm still having shift problems and the back up Suzuki dealer is changing out the cables on the 25th. The dealer I bought it from couldn't solve the simple problem after 2 attempts and each time I came out with more problems then I went in with. I'm amazed that Wareham Lund dealership is still in business, especially with the incompetent boobs he has working for him.

Anyway, maybe by the time I'm good to go, we can check out the action down your way. I'm soooooooo ready to start striper fishing.

GS, Not looking good here yet... If it wasn't for this weekend's cod trip, I'd be fishless. WestWall yesterday - no fish but the conditions were good. Friday night at the toilet (Providence) - no fish, not a single stinkin' tap... Freshwater sounds preety good right about now...

We're looking to do the Mystery Trip on the 29th of April (less than 2 weeks away). I hope that FW & BC were succesful in their hunt today as there is not much happening down here. By then, yes, but not much right now. One word of note, last year started slow in RI but the Cape started OK and almost immediately after Rhody did...

Good luck with the boat. We may need to have the Good Father Guido Sarducci do an excorcism on the Suzuki Dealer for you. Did you get some coin back??

So, you've been busy with yardwork lately huh. I bet you found muscles you didn't even know you had. :) I hope the fish show up soon, I saw a couple guys trying to rush things along last night at the MMA tossing live herring with no luck. I have my boat ready to go in but it looks like winter weather for wend.

Sorry to hear your still having problems with the control cables. I hope you have better luck with dealer #2. I hope I don't get one of the boobs launching my boat for me, I will be watching them like a hawk. Good luck Bob.

I have been doing all my yard work as well.....one thing that I usually dont get to right away. I am getting myself through it by saying "do it now, or you will end up having to do it when the fishies arrive"!!!! Does that give anyone incentive??? Hee, Hee, Hee.....

Daggnabbit!!! Jenn, this is a secret but I'm going to try doing the yard work at night so I can still fish during the daytime if and when the little rats ever show up... I've got my work cut out for me too. The builder put the grass seed down on Oct 13 last year and only had a short time to grow before the freeze. The front yard ain't too bad but the back yard looks like herds of Chia-Pets burried throughout different parts of the yard :p ...

Yard Work :(. I thought we weren't supposed to swear as this is a family friendly message board. John, in spiet of having Chia Pets the fall is actually the best time to seed, you end up with less weeds. I had about five big stumps pulled between November and now, so I have an unprecedented amount of raking and stone removal to do. I am even contemplating hydroseed, but I don't want to sell my house so the new owners can have nice grass. On second thoughts I'll just let the nice green moss grow, it requires a lot less maintenance.

Isn't that green moss safer for when the kids fall??

Here's how it works. You let the moss go and you get grubs. You let the grubs go and you get your lawn rototilled by the skunks! :)

We're just gettin back to nature...Don't want to have an artificial monoculture.... Besides the moss protects the rocks when the kids fall on them ;)

After our addition last fall, our yard was destroyed, so the landscapers are supposed to start today, fill and regrade, topsoil, hydroseed by thursday.

Can't wait to start the watering process. I have 5 timers and sprinklers hooked up, so my yard will look like a golf course for three weeks.

I spent all three days this weekend splitting time between home depot, yard work, the boat, and tackle preparation. It was great to get out in the sun and fresh air.

But... I ain't gonna be happy till we get this party rockin' and rollin'... I was sure I would pop in to work today and see all kinda reports about all kinds of fishes. If we could just string a week of nice weather together...

I guess they'll be here when they get here. That's my prediction based on scientific fact... and you can quote me on that.

When your done come on up and do my lawn. Between my 4 golden retreivers, one which is a still a pup and loves to dig and my 3 boys, my lawn always looks like it's begging to be put out of it's misery.

I think your prediction on the stripers is right on the money...lol. This year is off to a slow start but come May in 2 weeks, they will be here.

John...the good news is that even though the lawn looks a little rough....it may still fill in as things start to warm....but you may want to do to "go over" on any large bare spots NOW as spring is the next best to fall when it comes to grass.....you can pretty much let it do its thing...if you wait till summer you will only end up watering it like a mad man (and lord knows you dont want to waste time in the fall :) )
I also want to add that some grass seed mixtures contain larger percentages of annual grasses (used for "quick" fill ins) and wont come back after the winter....make sure you get a good mix with a high percentage of perrenial seed in it....

Any brands recommended for grass seed? Easiest and quickest with most lush green for least amount of money ;-D ?? I'm going to re-seed it this week... But I do need the ground to be dry when I put it down or there will be boot sink marks all over the place...

I've had both good and bad luck with URI #2. Good luck when the bag was fresh and bad luck after a couple of years. The advantage to URI #2 is it has red fescue in it and that can tolerate the heat or so I am told. If you know someone with cows or horse and can sweep out the hay storage area that seed is actually the best. It may have quite a bit of clover, but at least it's green.

I lost almost the whole front yard to skunks grubbing last spring. I used Scotts starter fertilizer and scotts pure premium grass seed mixture and it came in nicely. Be sure to scratch the surface before sowing the seeds. The seeds won't sprout unless the ground surface has been scratched up with a rake.

John....scotts is a good brand of course but I think tends to be on the more expensive side. Your best bet is to find a brand such as Agway, etc.... Try choosing a "mix" that best suits your needs, most companies carry different mixes such as "sun-shade", "high traffic" and so on.....they should all have labels stating approximate germination times, types of grass included in the mix (again pick one best suiting your needs) , and coverage applications (meaning it may take twice as much of one variety to cover the same amount of area as another variety, do to the way it grows......thus also affecting total cost)
Try comparing the contents of two brands of similar mix to see what your best deal is......though stores should have this years crop of seed.....make sure the dates are good as age certainly does affect % of germination..

John - don't know how much area you have, but I have found that after you sow the seed, if you cover it with spun bonded floating row cover, it not only germinates faster, but also keeps the birds from eating half the seed. You can usually get it at Ocean State Job Lot. I use it on my vegetable garden for other reasons, but have used it on the lawn as well and have gotten much better and faster results than without it. Just remember to take it up before the grass gets too long, or it will start to grow trhough it and then you have a real mess. It is also reusable for three or four seasons. Is this becoming landscape.com? ;)

Hey dont think of it as landscape.com....but more like a fishermans help group!!! HA!HA! We all chip in to help others take their minds off the fact that we arent fishing!!!! See now doesnt that make you feel all warm and fuzzy???

I know, was just kidding. What else is there to do until the fish show up? I'll tell ya, I have 2 acres to tend to, about six different perennial beds, 500 square feet of vegetable garden, and if I see that white stuff one more time, ain't ever gonna get it set before the fishies arrive!!!!!!!!

Hey, Landscape.com is already taken, shucks darn... Actually, I want something that I can dump into the seeder thing, make a couple passes of the yard vegging to Pink Floyd's Pulse, throw some water at it and have it look like the fairways at Agusta... I don't need t worry too much about the birds as a few of the stray cats (the ones not eaten by the coyotes) keep the birds outa the yard... But I guess that level of ease won't produce a decent lawn, eh?
