Several guys out here fishing the derby mentioned it to me this morning and then I walked into the shop here and the first thing I heard was..."did you hear about the 82 at Montauk?"

I don't know ANY details but I heard this from 3 independent sources.

I just blasted through the other sights out there and I couldn't find any mention of it, even from the daily Montauk report. Need info badly. It may be true. I already double checked my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st, but it is a full moon.

I did the same prior to posting, found nothing.....so at this point it is hear-say but I figured I would pass along exactly what I heard.

I am going to make a couple phone calls to a couple buds at Montauk...probably will not hear from them until tonight.

There is someone on this board that lives out that way...Patchouge or Bayville area I think...maybe he knows.

....just called Freddy's in Montauk. They know nothing about it.

Well they certainly should know. Perhaps its BS. I certainly did not make it up.

I haven't heard a breath about it. Someone also posted on Stripersurf asking about it, saying he read about it on "another website". Probably here.

If it was true it would have hit Noreast.com first I think.

Freddie's would have heard about it---if I was the one who caught it, it would have hit the first scale west of the Point---and that would likely be Freddie's :D Johnny's would have probably yelled at the guy for getting bass slime on his floor :doh:

Made a few calls myself....No one has heard about this...highly doubtful.

BTW---this isn't the first "new world record at Montauk" rumor that ever got started at the Vineyard. Sometime around 1996 or 1997, the word was spreading towards the end of the Derby ;) I called home and no one heard squat.

what if I slid an 82 bass on the beach (yeah right) but decided not to have it weighed .......who would ever know?????my friends & family maybe.....and it might slip out to others. Then the entire internet fishing community would be gossiping just like this and say "wow....what a crock of s$#T!!!!!!"

I stopped believing fish stories a long time ago myself......so its just a thought....

you're right.

My older brother's father in law is from Maryland originally and told me of a bass that his dad caught when he was a kid that was easily 100 lbs. and they ate it. With a family that had 11 kids they only thought of it as food.

Thats how they sometimes do C&R fish.

You can get a record accepted for a released fish. You can submit a Manley, Chatillion or Boga-Grip scale to the IGFA and they'll check it for accuracy. If it's within a pound of true weight, they'll certify it for record submission for one year. Like likwd said, you also have to submit photos and measurements along with the weight, and it has to be witnessed.

You have to weigh a fish while your feet are planted on land or a dock---you can't weigh the fish while aboard a boat. The land doesn't necessarily have to be dry but your two feet have to be on it.

that was the whole point really...that fiction can be spread so quickly and that the truth doesnt ALWAYS become a well known fact!!!!! Some people just dont want it to be known and I cant blame them...think of all the people you know that have a 50# or more under their belt and all the sceptics that thought they were full of crap!
