STEVE IN MASS 04-20-2001, 07:02 AM Saturday: Grocery Shop, Garden Work, Steak on the Grill, Sleep
Sunday: Take the wife to introduce her to the RI beaches (okay, so the fishing gear will be in the car ;)), stop off to get soemthing to eat.
BTW, is The Lobster Pot in Bristol any good? We will be at the South County Beaches and looking for a decent resturant, and Bristol is a bit out of the way (as if anything can be "out of the way" in RI), so it would have to be worth it. My Grandparents seem to like it, but I can't always trust their judgement on resturants. (Hey they like to eat at Friendly's!) Any suggestions? Something right on the water would be nice.
JohnR 04-20-2001, 07:33 AM Great Burger Joint in Wakefield called the Mews - nearly the best burgers in Rhody, not a fast food joint... not on the water... but along the lines of a 99
The Spain in Narragansett, next to scarborough town beach is waterfront, might even have the "open" (not quite outside) seating area available.... Good food, good prices, good sangria
Saltheart 04-20-2001, 07:47 AM Smokey and i hope to cast the first skin jigs from our new mold tonight. the mold and inserts look good but there is a possibility that the mold is too long to get under the pour spout. That would mean hand ladling. That would be a pain.
I hope to get down to my boat this weekend. Slim chance of getting the bottom painted.
I hope to fish the Wall Sunday. Maybe see you there.
Saltheart 04-20-2001, 07:53 AM Some restaurant suggestions for Steve. right on the water , There are two good clean but not fancy places in matunick. Joyces Family Pub and Ocean Mist. In Misquamicut , you can get decent food at The Andrea Hotel , nice but not fancy. For real gourmet stuff , Mary's Italian Restaurant almost on the Charletown / Westerly line of Rt1 is excellent. A little pricey but most excellent!! :) I also like Cody's near Dunns Corner. Similar menu and atmosphere like a 99.
JohnR 04-20-2001, 01:49 PM Might see you Sunday and, uh, I may need to ,a, inspect your creation....
Slipknot 04-20-2001, 03:12 PM After reading about that 25 lber at least someone in New Bedford is happy. I still don't have my van back, they can't get the temp gauge working and they need an adjustment screw for the headlight , so now it will be Monday. :( On the brightside my boat went in the water today, the glass is half full Yippee. So when my wife gets home I will head out to find some schoolies. Sat. I may go get some herring with my son for the freezer or maybe get one of those pens and keep some at the dock. Us boys are on our own since the wife and daughter will be on an overnight for Brownies. The Sunday I gotta go to church, my nieces confirmation. After that maybe some schoolie fishing.
Got Stripers 04-20-2001, 06:26 PM Freshwater for me tomorrow am. I'm waiting for some consistant reports before making any switch in a big way. Not that I don't mind chasing the illusive stripes, but I enjoy a good day of freshwater fishing, so I'm in no hurry.
Should be a good mixed bag for me tomorrow and maybe I'll see one of you nuts at the Wareham herring run...I'll be right across the road fishing...lol.
Tight lines.
JeffH 04-20-2001, 07:40 PM Lets see.
Liittle League field clean-up Saturday till 11:30am. 8 year old daughters b-day Sat. from 12:00 till 3:00. Yard work from 3:30 till dark. In-laws visiting on Sunday. THE WEEKEND IS A BUST.....
JohnR 04-20-2001, 10:02 PM Sorry Jeff... It sounded almost tolerable until you mentioned that last part... Would you rather change highly soiled diapers?
Patrick 04-20-2001, 10:21 PM Patch Waders. I still haven't gotten around to do that. Mainly because I haven't gotten a straight answer. What is the best way to patch rubber waders?
Let's see. Call friends for Job references. I hate talking on the phone.
Go fishing.
Then, you know, the usual plotting, scamming, conniving.
Fishpart 04-23-2001, 05:58 AM Patrick, go to Wal-Mart, Kmart, or the local hardware and get a tube of the stuff called Sportmans Goop, Household Goop, or SHoe Goo. It is all essentially the same and made by the same company. It smells and behaves the same as Aquaseal without the dive shop price. Get some laquer thinner and clean the area you want to patch and let the thinner dry, it removes oil, armor all and such. Then lay the area you want to patch flat and apply some goop to the area. As it dries overnight it will kind of level itself down and leave a tough rubber skin.
I patched some severely dry rotted Bennys specials a couple of years ago and they still keep me dry.
Saltheart 04-23-2001, 08:46 AM What kind of waders are they Patrick? Neoprene , rubber coated canvas , breathables , ??
Patrick 04-23-2001, 09:07 AM Rubber coated canvas. I fixed them with 3m Scientific Anglers Ultra Flex adhesive. It worked okay. The hole was just a slit the diameter of a dime. The only thing I don't like is it's not an actual patch job. It's just a 2 part adhesive that gets smeared over it. Sorta like epoxy but it's flexible. I can see it's coming up a little so next time, I'm going to snip a little piece of the old pool liner and use that as a patch. Otherwise, this stuff worked allright.
Saltheart 04-23-2001, 09:27 AM I think the best bet for rubber coated canvas is a rubber bicycle tube patch. the trouble with rubber waders is that once they start to go , they crack up and leak everywhere. If they are still relatively new but torn , a rubber patch plus a smear of shoe goo would help. In some areas , like on the crotch seam , nothing seems to hold up long.
Patrick 04-23-2001, 09:55 AM Well the hole is just in the leg, on the inside. It's not so bad. The only problem is they are so darn hot. I'm only going to use them in the spring and fall so they should last me a bit longer. In the summer, it's a swimsuit all the way.(the women love the legs :D ) I actually save the inner tubes from old bikes. (they make great water balloon sling shots) Maybe I'll just cut a square out of them.
Hey, if any of you guys are looking for good stuff to put on the bottom of your waders but you don't want korkers to add to the weight, get this stuff called "Shoe Goo". Skateboarders put it ont he bottom of their shoes to get better traction.
JohnR 04-23-2001, 10:24 AM Have you used Shoe Goo on slippery rocks? There is a helluva difference between boarding and standing on a forward sloped rock with the surf banging on your nears and a big bass pulling the other way. Don't use anything on the bottom of your waders other than Korkers and korker like studs or Felt soles in areas that they are good. Patrick, I seriously doubt that it would hold a candle to Korkers on slick rocks and I don't want someone to get the false impression that they can skimp on safety and get away with it. Many of these places we fish can be extremely dangerous if approached with improper gear and disregard to playing things smart and safe. Do not skimp in the safety department.
Saltheart 04-23-2001, 10:25 AM Shoe goo won't keep you from slipping on a slimmy rock.Probably great to keep you on a skateboard but on a slimmy surf rock , don't count on anything but metal cleats.
Patrick 04-23-2001, 10:59 AM Oh no no no. I wasn't talking about wearing Shoe Goo to go rock climbing. I'm just saying when I'm walking and I hit a shell bed, I slip a little here and there. Same thing if I don't see a rock in front of me. I find the sand slippery too. Before when I was going barefoot, my foot would sink into the sand. Now my boot sits on top of the sand and it's more prone to the water moving. More surface area and all. Let's face it, those little designs on the bottom aren't really for traction unless you have the big lugs. I'm thinking the shoe goo actually sticks off the bottom to give you traction. Of course it won't replace korkers.
Jaiem 04-23-2001, 11:27 AM Agree with John and Saltheart about the Korkers. It's like night and day. Even felt doesn't help as well (better than nothing but still not enough IMO). The only thing I've found that even comes close is the felt soles with studs in them. But they're such a pain to get attached you might as well stay with Korkers.
That's not to say Korkers will turn you into Spiderman. You can still be knocked down with them on (been there, done that)! But it's so much a safety feature.
Patrick, while I'm not a skateboarder I do believe most "professional" style skate boards have non-skid tape on them. Or thr pros add the tape. Either way I can see how a better rubber sole coating could help grip the tape. But haven't seen too many rocks with non-skid tape lately. ;)
Charlie M 04-23-2001, 12:02 PM Patrick...Skateboards have grip tape on them. Shoe Goo is to repair the sides of the shoe as it wears very quickly as you do tricks and need to use the front of your foot to control the board. I have never seen any one put it on the bottom of the shoe. I would think that shoe goo would make things more slippery instead of less.
Charlie
Patrick 04-23-2001, 12:04 PM Yeah. Skateboards have tape on their boards called "Grip tape" oddly enough. But when you consider the speed that they are going on halfpipes or even streetskating, this adhesive backed sandpaper isn't enough. That's when they put the shoe goo on. When they do moves like ollies,(jumping with the board following) they need the extra stuff. I'm telling ya, it will add extra traction!
Charlie M 04-23-2001, 02:44 PM I know what skateboarding is...I have been riding for more than my ankles want to remember. Shoo goo won't do jack to keep you on the board. Aligning your center of gravity and momentum with the boards will. Shoo goo is for repairing shoes. I hope you know what you are talking about...But I don't think you do...Please don't mislead people on things you aren't sure about. I have never heard of anyone doing what you prescribed
Oh...and ollieing is quite the opposite of how you describe it. You actually pop the board off the ground and catch it with your front foot.
Charlie
Patrick 04-23-2001, 03:53 PM I'm going to have to disagree with the ollieing part, at least how I do or did it until I broke my trucks off on a rail slide.(they were GrindKing IIIs too) But since this is a fishing board and not a skateboarding board, I'll leave it at that.
Dude! you just need to STOP IT RIGHT THERE!!!! Under no circumstance can I possibly see what you're saying making any sense whatsoever!!!!! I dont think anyone would take that advice in their right mind anyway.....but I pray to god they dont because that could be fatal ......I almost wish this entire thread could dissappear just in case..........yes Patrick you have scared me to death....the thought of it is absolutely horrifying!!!!
May I suggest a little expirement??? take that Sh*! and put it on something....let it dry ...bring it to the bathroom.....wet the tub...and drag the goo covered object across the tub......let us know how you make out....
