View Full Version : Using Teasers rwilhelm 10-21-2003, 03:11 PM Do you use teasers with your plugs? If so do you get a lot of hits on the teaser itself? Big Vern 10-21-2003, 03:13 PM Yes and yes. JHABS 10-21-2003, 03:37 PM And teasers just don't catch little FISH.....;) capesams 10-21-2003, 03:42 PM still say the best teaser made is an old pork rind. rwilhelm 10-21-2003, 03:59 PM Got some Red Gills on the way can't wait to try them. tlapinski 10-21-2003, 04:00 PM this past weekend in RI, i caught well over 125 bass in the two nights i spent fishing WH. the DEADLY combo was a HABS needle with a peanut bunker type teaser ahead of it. i had many doubles, but the largest fish i took, as well as my fishing partner, was caught on the teaser. not to take anything away from the HABS, though, as some very respectable fish were taken on that too. i even tried using other plugs to deliver the teaser such as atom 40's and darters and bottle plugs, but the needle/teaser combo was HOT! one thing i will recommend, and a lot of people forget this, is to use the longest leader you can comfortably cast. i use a 5' minimum leader, with about a 15" dropper off the swivel ahead of the plug. teasers have there time and place, and this weekend was both! rwilhelm 10-21-2003, 04:04 PM TL does a longer leader help in avoiding it from getting twisted on the line to the plug? tlapinski 10-21-2003, 04:28 PM the original theory i go by is that if a large fish comes up to take the teaser, but gets hit by the plug, it will be spooked off. i used to use shorter leaders, but after i lengthed them, my results improved. Nebe 10-21-2003, 09:02 PM I use the exact fishie you have as your icon on a mustad 7/0 hook. Deadly with a capital "D" If I want it to sink I'll put a split shot ahead of it. rwilhelm 10-22-2003, 07:27 AM Eben the cocahoes are good lures, you could also just put a jighead on it. Big Vern 10-22-2003, 08:23 AM In my opinion, I think that the key to fishing with teasers is rigging the leader correctly. Otherwise, the teaser will continually wraps around the main line, and if you use braid, you can kiss any good fish that hits the teaser goodbye along with the teaser. Like the big lapinski said, use as long of a leader as you're comfortable with - I usually use around 4-5 feet. About six inches down from a swivel tie in a dropper loop. Some people I've seen will tie the teaser into a longer dropper loop, keep a number of leaders statically rigged with different teasers in a leader wallet, and change out the whole leader if they want to change teasers. I find it easier to tie in a short 1-2 inch dropper loop, and tie the teaser onto a 12 inch piece of flourocarbon with a loop knot to the teaser, and a loop on the other end. That way it's really easy to change teasers. However, the main factor is the dropper loop on the main leader - it stops the teaser from getting wrapped up. I almost exclusively fish with plugs, and the teaser is a way of life for me. Lots of times the fish are on really small bait, and the ONLY thing that they'll take will be one particular teaser in your bag. I had one night this summer when the bass were on micro sandeels, and fifty yards out. I had a 6 inch sluggo on a 3/4 leadhead with a small epoxy sandeel teaser. I probably caught 30 fish that night, and I'd say 29 of 30 hit the teaser. If you plug fish, I advise fishing with a teaser. Steve K 10-22-2003, 09:22 AM I use a dropper almost all of the time that I fish with plugs. Sometimes fish will only hit the dropper and other times just the plug, but I do believe that the dropper adds to the attraction of the plug itself. I agree with using the longest leader that you are comfortable with but if you leader is only 2 to 3 feet long, I would not hesistate to use a dropper. I do worry sometime that a fish that just takes the dropper can be hung up by the trailing plug if I gets caught on a rock or something else. fishweewee 10-22-2003, 09:42 AM Sometimes I'll forego the plug altogether and attach a 2 or 3 oz bank sinker at the end. Neanderthal fly fishing. :p RIROCKHOUND 10-22-2003, 10:27 AM WW, the fd method... I skip the sinker and use a crippled herring, same weight and shape but maybe they might grab that instead... 'hound fishweewee 10-22-2003, 11:04 AM RIRH- I don't use the teaser to catch the fish. I count on the bank sinker to bop the stripers on the head and stun them momentarily so I can just reach in and grab 'em. :bshake: Fisherwoman 10-22-2003, 11:16 AM One thing to remember is that if you are using a teaser, which we make many of, and sell thru out the year, it also depends on which length rod you are using. When we make our teaser rigs for our light tackle rods, we use 30 lb seagar floro, the main leader is about 2 -3 ft long and the teaser leader is about 1/2 that length. The reason it works so well is the premise of chase. It looks like the lure is chasing the fly and the fishes instint is to react. It also give you the advanage of size of bait presentation. If you tie up a leader 5-6 ft long and cast it on a 7 ft rod you will not get the proper distance on your cast because it will be too long to load the rod properly, on an 11 ft rod, that is different. I have also found that the reason our teaser goes up on the main line soley depends on the lure you are using. The more aero dynamic the lure the less the leader will come up on to your main line. The most times it will come up on the main line I have found is when using soft plastics as they just don't cut thru the air like a popper or metal. I use braided line soley and have never had that affect my teaser usage. We tie 2 separate knots on a small barrel. 1 for the fly leader, 1 for the main leader and we tie a small heavy snap at the other end of the main leader for the lure so we can change up when we want to. I have never had terminal tackle affect my lure usage as far as hooking up. If a fish can swim by that lure and tell me that he won't take something that isn't real already because there is a snap in front of it I don't think so. He is eating something that isn;t real already. The reason we use 2 seperate leaders, one for the fly and one for the main leader is that if you get a double you don't have both fish pulling on the main leader with a dropper loop on it and have a chance at losing both fish especially if they are large. We have also found that most of the time the larger fish will take the fly over the smaller fish. But either way you decide to us them is your own preference as most guys have said. But usiong them IMO will defiatley increase your hookup ratio.  Nebe 10-22-2003, 01:20 PM Originally posted by Fisherwoman The reason we use 2 seperate leaders, one for the fly and one for the main leader is that if you get a double you don't have both fish pulling on the main leader with a dropper loop on it and have a chance at losing both fish especially if they are large. I totally agree on this. I had had posted a thread about catching 2 big stripers at once a few weeks ago and had my teaser rigged this way.. I believe that if I had the teaser tied off of the main leader, I would have lost both of them and the plug too. Yes it will tangle once in a while, but so what. Tagger 10-22-2003, 02:14 PM teaser yes...my favirote thing to throw.....2 1/2" - 4" rubber teaser..white or black...white on full moon killer....Folllowed by 9" needle slow sinker.....cast great...produces Bazza 10-22-2003, 04:06 PM Fisherwoman makes some very nice teaser rigs. You may want to purchase some of hers if you do not make your own. Fisherwoman 10-23-2003, 11:02 AM Why thank you Bazza, I wasn't meaning to sell them just trying to point out that we do make alot of them and have alot of success on them but that there are alot of things that make them more successful then just tying one up. I am getting ready to start tying soon, was gonna wait till after bambi season but if I start now i just might get about 1500 done this year which is our goal.   vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
