View Full Version : I feel like...
RIROCKHOUND 10-29-2003, 01:06 PM I am the man of 1000 questions...
Ok, as stated below A. I need a new jetty rod
B. I may have found a blank I like and want to redo it...
What would be the bear bones minimum required items to wrap a rod (the obvious like blank, guides and motor/stand not included as I have these three).. I'm talking threads, tools, expoxies, etc.. not looking for the fanciest rod.. just a barebones list of basicis to make a rod that won't fall apart on my halfway through next season...
Thanks everyone.. you're all a big help...
Bryan
DRUMCORPFAN 10-29-2003, 01:29 PM rockhound, if your going with uderwraps for your guides get one spool (100 yrd.) of that color and one spool for the overwraps, that should take care of bare bones thread. 1 stick of tip cement, 1 bottle of color preserver, flexcoat finish comes w/syringes pre measured get a kit of that. use the back of a spoon to rub your wraps that will take care of any gaps, no special tools needed. use dental floss for your tie off loop, maybe a decal and sharp clippers for cutting. that should get you going have fun and post pics when your done. :D
JohnR 10-29-2003, 01:37 PM You have a rod wrapper? If you can find 1/4" masking tape get that, the epoxy, some denatured alcohol for cleaning - like thouroughly cleaning the inside of the reel seat. I use to use the smooth handle of a butter knife for burnishing the wraps but you can get a burnishing tool for $3. Get Dale Clemmens' book Advanced Custom Rod Building and read it a couple of times - you'll figure out what you need to read (learning the spine is very important).
Other than that budget out some time, if you go with Black NCP over Black NCP thread you won't need the color preserver and you'll have a stealth rod...
RIROCKHOUND 10-29-2003, 01:41 PM John,
I have a homemade model with a motor and stands (Used to spin plugs dry, but is slow enough to wrap rods with a few modifications on the stands...

Been out much? wanted to go tonight but looks nasty out there...
Goose 10-29-2003, 01:46 PM I like my stealth rod , thanks JR
RIROCKHOUND 10-29-2003, 01:50 PM JR,
Reread my post.. no I dont have a rod wrapping tool, saw some on cabelas fairly cheap.. I meant that I have a motor/stand set up that will work.. gonna go get that book now before I ask anymore dumb questions :D

JohnR 10-29-2003, 01:57 PM Yes - the book is great, it also has a section on how to build the simplest and cheapest rod wrapper out there - 5 wire coat hangers :) - and it works as I buily my first few rods that way....
Goose - looks like you have another one coming - do you want a 1087 for lighter stuff? bombers and such :D
Christian 10-29-2003, 04:37 PM good post,
maybe some acetone too for cleanup on the epoxy. xacto knife. some tiny wicked sharp cissors. a couple cds to play while wrapping, puts you in a different world. im practicing on a broken rod here so i can make the ones this winter schweeeeet.
Goose 10-29-2003, 04:46 PM Christains right... shap scissors is a must.
John, you know we throw alota bait....lol but I'm not witchin:D
Just say NO to black NCP thread.
IMHO always use regular black thread. If you have black NCP do youself a favor and throw it away...
If you should use it inconjuntion with CP a most horrid nightmare will ensue
Chris
JohnR 10-29-2003, 06:41 PM Pasngas... I used it fine on an all black rod - worked fine... (although I will certainlky defer to you on rod building knowledge & waterborne navigation skills :D )
Goose - will need to see what we can get :) - We going fishing (there) soon?
John did you use it on a decorative butt wrap? That is where the problems will arise, also sometimes in the guide wraps. I have found no advantage to NCP black thread. If one of you guys has I'm all ears.
What happens is The NCP thread when hit with color presever(cp) expands - imagine the mess.
Some color preservers (flxcoat) leave a smokey blue hue on black thread that only shows up after you epoxy.
So why do I bring these up - KIS - Keep it simple. This is for the new builders. If you use regular black thread all the time cp is not an issue cause you can use it or not without adverse affects. Gudebrod 811 is ok. Im going to try floor wax soon. (acrylic)
Another deep thought on to cp or not on any build:
- No cp & the epoxy penetrates to the blank
- Cp then epoxy the epoxy does not go all the way to the blank which if you ever want to re build years down the road makes it much easier. From what I have seen no strenght is lost by using cp.
Stealth rods look great however a single strand of mettalic can really set them off. I'm partial to a blast of silver in the black.
