Laptops are great but only pay for what you need.

If you are going to do internet surfing and email and possibly word documents I would suggest:

(THIS ARE STATE OF THE ART MINIMUMS)

1. 1 Gig CPU ( Mobile )
2. 16 to 32 Meg of Video RAM
3. 256 Meg of RAM minimum
4. Windows XP Home or Pro
5. Minimum 20 Gig Hard Drive running 5400rpm
6. Basic sound card
7. 15 inch LCD Screen
8. CD ROM
9. Floppy Drive installed
10. Power adapter / possibly car lighter adaptor.

mr.macey - I have a Compaq Armada E500, it's my workpc 3yrs old and I take it to and from the house daily.
The only problem I've had is the battery in it died, so It always needs a power source, other than that no problems.

a good site for opions on laptops and lots of other stuff is
www.epinoins.com

good luck.

Speaking of cheap laptops. I just purchased two relatively old but in good condition laptops from my employer AT&T.

Toshiba Protege 7000 models with MS Windows 98 SE. Only 266 MHz with 6 Gig hard drives and a CD/DVD player in supplied docking station and they were $285.00 apiece.

Just loaded Office 2000 on my daughters and works fantastic. Also has built in NIC and battery lasts 3.5 hours
