View Full Version : Plug Swap

Well the fish are gone (for the most part) from our waters so how about a plug swap. This will be limited to the fisrt 10 people who respond. Each builder will have to build 12 identical (or as close as possible) plugs. Each builder will ship me 11 plugs and $5 (to cover mailing) and I will handle the distrubution. 2 of each plugs will go to John to help with the site. 1 set for him and the other for a raffle or however he sees fit to part with them. And 1 each will go to the other builders in the swap. I would like to be able to get them done by the week before Christmas.

Still designing... :smash: Was gonna do a 2 oz deep darter, but I don't have any fast water within drving distance to test it. It works fine in flat water, dives down and runs like a drunken sailor at about 8-10 feet, but it will pop out occassionally at a fast retrieve, so it still needs tweaking. I'll probably turn out a tried 'n true popper design I worked on all summer... slightly under 2 oz... the way I saw some of you canal casters slinging lead in the Ditch, this thing outta be outlawed in your arsenal... even in a headwind, it flies like a small rocket at takeoff. Blue over silver OK?

I am not a maker just a drooler of all your fine work. Let me suggest that instead of a raffle that an auction take place for the site for the collection. AND that you guys each put your small signiture on the belly of the plug to be auctioned. This would make it quite unique as a collectable and bring the most $ for an auction. I myself would push the fiscal limits for a complete collection of all your work.
Just a suggestion.

....I still prefer Enviro-tex Lite for ease of application and mirror smooth finish in one coat...I haven't tried Mirror-Coat yet but have tried Sys-3...:smash:

MAC
12-12-2003, 08:38 PM
I like the envirotex for its ease of use but found the finish to be on the soft side compared to system3 clear coat. The mirror coat is kind of in between clear coat and envirotex. I am looking into trying pellucid next for a real tough finish. The flammability is the only thing leaving me nervous.

chumbucket
12-12-2003, 08:49 PM
NG, You are correct about the Enviro...
...That Pelucid? Is that the solid stuff you have to dissolve in some sort of solvent before you can use it?

chumbucket
12-12-2003, 08:52 PM
prime your blank with sys3 then paint and coat with sys3 = gives those blues a toothache  :tooth: :vamp:

MAC
12-12-2003, 09:05 PM
no, just brush it on, 1 part no mixing. Just pour a small amount into a seperate container and brush on (or spray on). I do my finishing in basement, so fumes and flammability could pose a problem.

you can also get pigments to use in the clear coat to colorize it. With an epoxy prime then primer, paint and a top coat of epoxy the plug comes out pretty bulletproof. Just alot of steps.:smash:

Slipknot
12-12-2003, 09:22 PM
 Dave, please DON'T spray pelucid in your basement!

VERY VERY BAD idea. don't even think about it. Don't even brush it on inside. Even outside you still need a good charcoal filter respirator to even brush it on outside. It's not like laquer, although they both are flammable. Very dangerous stuff. Use it outside only or have a powerful enough explosion proof fan to get rid of fumes and put out all pilot lights and have some way for fresh air to enter to replace the exhausted air. Please don't spray that stuff. yer scaring me like bassmaster does.

MAC
12-12-2003, 09:27 PM
I haven't bought any and am having doubts. The risks associated with it have made me leary. Wouldn't be able to do it in basement anyways as the wifey hates any kind of lacquer or chemical smell.

chumbucket
12-12-2003, 10:42 PM
Use regular System-3 Clearcoat as a sealer on the bare wood blank. Then prime, paint and top-coat with System-3 Clearcoat. The Sys-3 clearcoat is thin enough to soak into the cedar.
Sys-3 does make an epoxy primer WR-155 in white or gray but I haven't tried it.

Hmmmm... last in, last out? Hated to experiment on swap plugs, but took a chance by going with Sys3-MirrorCoat instead of the Devcon-30 I've always used. I have to honestly say that this was the first time I ever was able to epoxy more than 5 plugs from the same mix... I did 15 plugs with the MirrorCoat, and the finish looks great.

I still have to thru-wire (later this afternoon, hopefully) before I can ship them, but I want to make certain the epoxy sets up well enough to allow handling. Man, seeing these all together -- looking so fine -- makes it really hard to send them away.

But, I know what's coming...

Mine are all wired up, but I'm gonna hold them for another day, Newelly, if that's alright... the mirror coat is nice, but it thinned out a bit on some of the plugs and dimpled in a few spots... nothing major, but I recoated all the plugs, to be safe, and they'll need the extra time to harden up. I'll ship 'em out tomorrow, priority, so you should have them in your hot little hands by Friday.

Just by way of reference, it might be nice if each of us would post here, what size hooks are recommended for optimum performance on their swap lure... on mine, a 2/0 4x treble up front and bucktail dressed 4/0 siwash on the rear. Depending on what brand of hooks you use, they'll add another couple of tenths of an ounce to the overall weight, and bring the total fishing weight (on mine) to somewhere's just under 2 ounces.

bassmaster
12-15-2003, 11:39 AM
start out with vmc 1/0 on mine and a 3 or a 4/0 siwash on the tail

Glad you like 'em NG, and thank you for handling the swap this year. We appreciate it.
On my plug if you want to hook it up vintage striper plug style, I suggest 4/0 or 5/0 3x strong crimp-on cut Mustad trebles. If you prefer VMC's, 5/0, 4/0 and a 6/0 or 7/0 siwash on the tail (if you can find 'em).

Hooks for mine... I use a 1/0 VMC treble up front and a 4/0 Siwash dressep up a bit in the back.

I must offer a disclaimer with mine. I used you guys as Guinea Pigs :D The plugs are made out of cypress and I tried a new glitter finish idea so the plugs feel a little bumpy. They will definately catch though... I spent countless hours making protos to get the weighting right etc. I am really excited to get the others!!!!!

I prefer 3/0 VMC for the front and a 5/0 dressed siwash for the back. Looking forward to seeing everyone's creations.

Well, they're on their way. I'm satisfied with how they turned out, and I hope you guys find them acceptable. They're a shape I've been tweaking since August, and made from AYC, although I'm not 100 percent settled on the wood... I plan to work with it some more this winter, as weather permits... "Caribbean schoolbus" can be fished at night, but is probably a first light through mid-morning choice.

Newelly, thanks for hosting this swap,:btu: and where's my box of lures, already? :p

You guys are incredible! Chum - you blew me away! I am having trouble deciding whether to fish some of these or not. I'd be interested to know what each of you used for clearcoat. Christian - I love the plug and I can't not use it I know I'm gonna take some nice fish this spring on it. EP - I have to fish yours too - way too intrigued! But seriously... excellent excellent stuff.

Did anyone notice that BMs plug smells like a big mac? Go ahead.. smell it.

Thanks NG.. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery from your operation!

I used Enviro-tex Lite on my swap plugs.
I tried Sys-3 clearcoat on a few other plugs before this swap & it was a real mess. Lots of small bubbles that didn't want to go away, weird curing that set quick on the surface but not below the surface. I think the two bottles were too cold as I store them in a cooler part of the cellar.:smash:
