Last year I bought a book by Joseph Bates, Jr. which documents the history of steamers and bucktails. There's a whole section in the book on saltwater flies. I tied up several of the patterns from the book and used them this summer. This was one that worked pretty well when the smaller sand eels were in on the flats of the beaches up here on the North Shore. WOOLNER’S SAND EEL: pattern from Streamers and Bucktails, The Big Fish Flies, by Joseph Bates, Jr. My changes to the pattern are noted in parenthesis. Hook: Regular 4/0, stainless steel (I used an Eagle Claw 254 2/0.) Head: Green with white eye and black pupil. (I used some chartreuse thread.) Tail: A green neck hackle with tip removed, so that the spine protrudes ˝”. Body: Silver Mylar tubing 3 ˝ “ long. (I could only find silver holographic tubing….) Wing: Small bunch of green bucktail (12 hairs) as long as the tubing, with a few hairs of black bucktail on top. Cheeks: Jungle cock Additional helpful tying details taken from Bates book are as follows: “To dress this fly, take the core from a 3 ˝” length of silver Mylar tubing (piping). Dip the end of the green neck hackle in cement and insert all but ˝” into the tubing, lashing it in place with black thread. Push the barb end of the hook through the other end of the tubing until nearly an inch is threaded on; then push the hook through the tubing and push the tubing on the shank of the hook, where it is tied down behind the eye. The tubing now should be straight. Dress the fly as usual.” He further notes that the tubing should be 1/8” in diameter. It's real easy to visualize this tied up with different colors. The book is well woth buying if you can find it. Lots of really good info in it! saltydog 12-16-2003, 04:51 PM STEELHEADER, thats cool,:) 'GOOD LUCK GOOD TYIN"   steelhead 12-16-2003, 05:07 PM Saltdog, Thanks! I have been amazed how many great looking flies there were in this book and they work! There was one called a Ballou Special, made of white marabou plumes and peacock herl topping, yellow bucktail throat that i did up and just whcked the bass this fall during the fall run! I'll try to post a picture of it if I can find a decent one in my fly box. I did a whole series of these old flies for another site about a year ago. stripemoon.com Roger 12-17-2003, 07:56 PM Here's a very simple eel fly that I've found very effective after dark. Last season it accounted for 2 bass to 27" in the waning hours of the Martha's Vineyard Catch and Release Tournament (It was a classic - dark and stormy night). Another notable catch was a 34" bass from an 12 foot hump in 50 feet of water in Narr. Bay. Basically, it is just an olive rabbit strip attached Matuka style to a yarn body. I use either mono or copper wire to bind the strip to the body. This is my last one, so it is a little used and ragged. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-12/547182/Eelfly1.jpg steelhead 12-17-2003, 09:10 PM That guy must swim like crazy! I hope it wasn't your casting arm? I'm still looking forward to fishing with you this spring at the Creek. Went fishing Christmas Day at the Creek, just before high tide. It had to have been one of the highest non-storm high tides I have seen in years. Water up over the tops of the fence railings on the backside of the property. The marsh was one giant lake... No fish, but the Creek still has bait around. Heard that some schoolies were taken just last week! Hope you heal up real quick.
