Hi Guys!
Went down to my usual herring run off Depot Rd. in Harwich this weekend to find that it is now open only to Harwich residents.
Just wondering if anybody knows of any other places (I know about the canal run), with directions. My dad said he heard of one near Tom Nevers Rd. (if this road actually exists) in Dennis.
Thanks,
Rick

Rick,

This info I received last year and far as I've been able to determine, it is still current. Here is a list of Mass Herring runs and who controls them....

Welcome to the site Rick, as far as I know that rule may have been overturned by the state. here is a link to a thread on SOL that is 2 pages long about your herring run. If I were you I would inquire about it from the town.

Hi Rick
I believe that the courts just ruled that the town of Harwich can not keep the run for just residents.
The reason was that they at one time accepted state money for the rebuilding of the run.
When this hapens the state now has controol and the herring & are available to all mass residentd.
Saying this I do believe the town may charge a fee for maintenance of the run but it is the same to all residents of the state.

as of 19:30 tuesday night when we went to depot st run harwich is going to force the state to act one way or another. after being open up until last night we encountered the herring nazi this evening and were told that unless the state is going to man the run with a herring warden then harwich is going to enforce their rule. since there is no town court this could be interesting if we go ahead and contest the tickets. see ya down there tomorrow night, we are going to take fish. have fun, we will

Good News!
I was at the Harwich run on Friday 5/11 @ 0900 and got 12 herring in one scoop.
No herring nazi and no fine. Anybody get tagged after last Tuesday?

sounds like harwich is still trying to save face...i don't care if the state doesn't provide a herring warden, that's not the point...the entire point is that state (read: taxpayer) money was used to fix that run, so the town CANNOT restrict access to residents only. i can't believe the town is still looking for a legal challenge. if i were a harwich taxpayer, i'd be less impressed that they want to restrict access and more irritated that they want to use taxpayer money to fund a court fight that they have already lost.
