I had to take typing in 9th grade in NY and it was a Regents class so we got a state given final exam (BTW I got a 92% on it). History of the typewriter was part of the class, so you'd think I could remember back 30 some odd years and answer that question, but I think I was concentrating on a young lady named Claudia who smelled great and sat in front of me during that part.
Maybe something to do with the keys being laid out so the more frequently often used ones were in easier to get to spots and lesser used ones more out of the way? Even after all that training I'm still a hunt'n pecker!

It's just the opposite, the most commonly used letters are out of the way where the weaker fingers have to be used. (remember manual typwriters?). This was to slow down typists who were paid by the sheet in those days.
