I want to give back something to the wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable community of fisher-people here, and maybe help JohnR out defraying some of the costs of maintaining this site. Just in time for the holidays! Please read carefully before bidding! 1) This auction is open to CURRENT S-B MEMBERS in good standing. :smash: fishweewee 12-11-2003, 07:14 PM Originally posted by STREETFIGHT 466 Sorry dude, had to be registered here before the auction started. JohnR 12-15-2003, 02:54 PM John you might just get about 4 years out of this Acution!! Maybe 4-6 months ... I cringe at the though of 4 years from now (unless I hit Powerball) Originally posted by Mr. Sandman What does it cost to run this site for a year? Probably not a public number so I can PM you a more specific $ (and if people are seriously interested they can ask too). For general sake, last year was more than $1500 and less than 3K in actual costs... Not taking into any account any labor. I've offset some of the costs with advertising & site sponsorship (I'm really cheap and I'm sure I could get more :wall: :hihi: ), these fundraisers are huge (the S-B Too Friekin' Cold Nite last year paid the lion's share of 03's bills). Some other web work I've done over the years paid the costs too. At first I ran this thing almost entirely out of pocket. So in addition to paying the bills out of my pocket in the old days, I did some more sites with the proceeds supporting this site. Because of last year's fundraisers I did not need to put any of "my" money into running the site and that's good seeing that I've been laid off since May :( ... Yes, I would like to make some money on the site to help pay for my fishing but I don't want to run it as something that needs to pay my mortgage and put food on the table. I don't want an online tackle shop as I think the business model is not for me. I have something in mind - NOT ONLINE TACKLE - that in a couple years could be somewhat complimentary but not selling bait or tackle or rods or stuff. We have some pretty good sponsors and we'll probably sign a few more down the road ( I don't want to saturate these boards or any particular area with sponsors - and we only get the good ones). I have no need or want to compete head to head with the people you see now. I don't want to do a "pay site" like some have mentioned. I think that really limits the openess of a site. IMO, this site kicks ass for a lot of reasons; we have pretty cool & knowledgable members, we have energenic new members and people new to the sport, people contribute plugs & prizes to our free tourneys, people don't cheat in the tourneys :btu: , people bring food and a good time when we have our little get-togethers, people meet from the site and become friends, I know I've met a ton of great people I never would have met otherwise and learned stuff that I might have learned later or never at all. Everyone pitches in so much in many different ways that it defines a "community". Some sites have tackle shops or popup adds, some places are magazine places, and a few, like S-B and I'll pick on FFSW for a moment :p , keep the lights on with fundraisers & sponsorships and the like. Where the members often contribute in some way to support this site, I think that's one of the key reasons this site is as open as it is... Sorry for falling a little off topic and spilling at the mouth :) ... Getting back to the topic at hand, if we continue to grow at a reasonable rate, these costs will still go up a bit too. I don't think we need to grow REAL fast or hard or that we even want to. And no deisre to be the biggest or even among the biggest. The only "advertising" S-B actually does is a booth at the MSBA show every spring. No adds in the maggies or online. Ooops, more spillage, OK - I'll shut up now :laughs: chris L 12-15-2003, 03:34 PM man someone tie his tongue ! he runneth over at the mouth . hurry up give him 10 dollars and he will go away . Mr. Sandman 12-15-2003, 04:55 PM "Maybe 4-6 months ... I cringe at the though of 4 years from now (unless I hit Powerball) " I have met 2 people so far who have won the 1 million MA scratch ticket...it ain't a ton but after tax it is about 35K per year for 20 years....that would keep my tanks full :D 526 Mr. Sandman 12-15-2003, 05:02 PM 4:00pm right? I won! woooohoooo!   you can all stop bidding now...;) RIJIMMY 12-15-2003, 05:03 PM Off topic, but inspired by John R's posting....... if there are any S-B events scheduled for this winter, I play in jazz quartet, we get pretty good $ for playing all types of events but I can talk the other guys into volunteering for an S-B event. I'm not sure if this is a jazz crowd, but we provide good background music to dinner, etc. I would love an opportunity to kick something back to this site. Mr. Sandman 12-15-2003, 07:27 PM I would like to thank all the donors of this auction. As many of you plug makers know I love your work and have been trying to get my paws on these for quite some time. I wish I had the time to get into building them myself and swap…I have the tools just not the time or knowledge…maybe someday. I think the level of detail and fit and finish is simply unmatched, you all are gifted and very generous to donate them to the site. Since these are so hard to come by and since the collection was so complete I was really drooling to get them, but I was not expecting to win with guys like BETTLE and SWEDE and others consistently bidding. To be honest I still think I got a good deal, and to know where the money was going made it that much easier to bid! JohnR does an amazing job as the site admin, and I know he puts in a lot of unpaid time to keep this going as it is. He certainly should not have to put up any money from his own wallet to keep this up. I think I speak for everyone that we are all thankful for his efforts. This place is a lot of fun. I want you all to know that I get an amazing amount of enjoyment from fishing quality plugs like these in our famous NE fishing waters… especially the islands. Surf fishing alone with lures like these in waters around here is almost storybook-like for me, and I cherish the time I get to do it and can’t wait to feel the initial the hit from a big fish when I put them to use this spring. Anyway, I am really grateful and look forward to meeting you all sometime to thank you in person. I am not a very social guy but perhaps I can swing by one of your winter get-togethers…and if you ever out here fishing MV drop me a PM, maybe we can share a beer and story. Thanks Again to all! Nice people, good cause, useful stuff.... Unfortunately I was at a meeting until 7 this evening. I definately would have gone to $600 but somehow I'm sure that Sandman would have claimed it for more. Congrats to the lucky winner and I am sure that your sentiments are those of everyone who comes to this site.... Merry Christmas to all... This was a really fun thread.
