View Full Version : WOW!
This afternoon I was lamenting on the fact that I wont be running the rocks of narragansett until next spring, so I went down to Hazard ave just to look around, take in some sea air, watch the scoter ducks and loons play in the water, when all of a sudden, 100 feet in front of me, BOOM!!!! a 40 foot long finback whale breached straight out of the water, and came crashing down sending spray almost to my feet. I just stood there with my mouth wide open in amazement as this enoumous whale fed on what looked like herring for about an hour. Totally amazing, and the best part about it was the fact that I was the only one there to see it. I wish I had my camera, becasue it was un-believable how close to shore this whale was.. I guess it had the bait pinned up to the rocks. It moved south, so I jumped in my truck and headed it off at Newton ave and watched it some more.. Breaching, slapping its tail, spewing spray out it's blow-hole. Then I ralized how long I had ben gone from work and left it there.
totally amazing.... If any of you Rhode Island guys can get down there, it might hang around while there is still bait to be eaten.
This made my month! I'm going to look around on the web at whale pictures, just to make sure it was infact a Finback..

Bassman18 12-08-2003, 04:56 PM neat :btu:
I'll be the guy livelining herring on the rocks wearing waterskis and a helmet. :D
Yep, it was a finback. The whale I saw didn't breach out of the water as far as the one in this photo, but was doing the same thing... shoting straight up, arching its back and slamming down..
Clammer 12-08-2003, 05:29 PM Made your day =good for you:D
Scotch Bonnet 12-08-2003, 06:16 PM Eben, I lived in that old house on the corner of South Pier and Ocean rd. I was lucky enough to see the same thing a few years back. This whale stayed around the rockpile off Pier5 for about 45 minutes and then started up into the Bay. My first instinct was to grab the pole and heave, but then reality set in.
beachwalker 12-08-2003, 07:11 PM Sweet :D
macojoe 12-08-2003, 07:25 PM I love seeing the whales and stuff like that!! Good for you! I would have going nuts calling people on the cell!!

scoobe 12-08-2003, 07:44 PM Thar she blows! Ya sure it wasn't the fat lady singing?
BigBo 12-08-2003, 07:52 PM They sometimes breach and slap the water like that to stun the bait fish, then circle around to scoop them up. Ya, I know........too much Discovery Channel. It's off season though.
ThrowingTimber 12-08-2003, 07:58 PM Pretty Sweet! I thought those tuna showed up around there this year.
RIROCKHOUND 12-08-2003, 08:22 PM Scotch... I live at 151 Ocean Rd, That big apt building on the corner of Congdon and Ocean... nice area.. except for traffic in the summer :lossinit:
'hound
Scotch Bonnet 12-08-2003, 09:04 PM RI, 1:15am was the worst in the summer. Drunks stumblin down the road or crashing thier cars into the wall.
BUT GOD DO I MISS WAKING UP TO THAT SUNRISE OVER THE WATER:crying:
Yeah I'm still smiling about it. If I had a camera on me, I could have taken some amazing photos. There's a bunch of bait around the pier and south of that, so I really think this whale might stay around for a couple days... but who knows.
Scoth bonnet- A friend of mine lives in that building now. He's a surfer and loves it.
Timber- Just like your girlfriend's grandpa said... "oneday, you'll see something on those rocks that will blow your mind!"
RIROCKHOUND 12-09-2003, 10:24 AM Scotch, A few years ago I wouldve been at the CG house chasing those boston girls around :D but the sunrises are incrediblly worth the small apartment and traffic.... plus no matter how bad parking is, I can always walk 45min and be at the mouth of the river.....
Eben, whale may come back.. gannets were busting bait 1/2 mile ENE of Monahans dock, so might be in the area still chasing herring... and/or mackeral....I'll probablly ride down there at lunch time, I'm only in Kingston right now.... Green explorer, probably will have on a brown and black plaid flannel
