I tried Waterlox on some plugs, works great at sealing, did the pail test for up to 7 days with only .1oz weight gain, but months later can't get rid of the SMELL in the wood, anyone else seen this too?
Smells like paint thinner if you smell the belly hole etc. yick.

The belly hole sniff test is as good way to check for cleanliness before you..........

I use a product thats probly similar to this one, never used waterlox, and have no after smell at all. It must be this particular product or mixture

The worst part is that in all the testing I did with the stuff back in August it worked great! Never noticed the smell....Then I made a small batch of stubbies to play with it and they're still sitting in the box waitin to be thrown out...Smells like chit when you open up a bag :eek:

The one's I did the testing with don't smell after being in the water though....

I have a barrel here you can throw your rotten plugs into..... :D

I install and finish floors for a living and am the Waterlox dealer for Nantucket. The smell is very hard to get rid of but I believe that, if left to dry properly, diminshes tremendously. We have to deliver homes here and the smell cooperates with proper ventilation. It is the best wood sealant I have ever worked with but it certainly is very potent material. Waterlox has come out with a low V.O.C. (Mass compliant) mix for this year which will have significant reduced odor.

Interesting! Any idea if it's available yet? Something I'd like to try. In testing the stuff worked very well, but it's the darn smell that makes it useless.

Before you toss'em try puttin them in oven @ 200 degrees for an hour or more. I have used this technique to dry out all kinds of things. Once I used it to dry out a cellphone....don't ask.

I would say for an off the shelf, quick finish coat it will probably haunt you. Air (clean air as in good airflow in the drying room/box) is key.
Also, Possibly coating them with a spray shellac after will cover up the Waterlox and eliminate the odor.

I haven't come across a better waterproof sealant for furniture, ever. NO water stains, EVER !

I'll get you some sample packs of the new stuff. I haven't got it yet but will soon....

hehe.. I dried out a cell phone once in an oven.. a microwave oven that is... i took the battery off then placed it in the oven set it for 2 min's and in 2 seconds the bloody thing powered up and before it reached 5 white smoke was pouring out from the mic, speaker, and keypad. lol

reading your post brought back 1 of the many funny moments i've experienced..

Don't think you'd want to heat bake wood lures, that may cause problems with the wood drying more than the 8-10% it is right now...could makem crack....

I should mention too that the smell I've found is out of the holes from the interior of the plugs, not from the outside which is painted and clear coated....

Like I told ya before, as long as it's not leaving a visible slick in the water I don't see any problems with it.If YOU got a problem with it, I got no problem taking the stuff off yer hands, as you already know ;) :) johnny "the Ratt Boy"
