Ok I am building a new rod, Now I am playing around with wraping! I am not the best but trying to learn by trial and error.

What I want to no is what you guys think of this color arangement?? I am not sure I like it??

Should it be all black, all silver and black?? or just the way it is??

If all silver and black will that silver tintsel thread be strong anough for the guide area??

It looks pretty nice the way it is, but if you want to tinker with it a bit you might want to try doing the guide wrap in black and halfway through it put a couple of turns of silver metallic in and finish with the black? Or you could do it something like this? If you can understand it? the entire area aready has the red underwrap and the 4th line in on the guide wrap would be silver with everything else black.

Just have to play around with it until something catches your eye!

Before you go any further cut the black off the guide wrap and color preserve the red thread with 2 coats. It's a lot easier to do it know so you don't get any CP on the black thread. This will give a true red color while leaving dark Black over wrap.

I have not done the color presever yet. But I am going to.
I was trying out this wrap first. I am going to take it off. I like the idea of going 1/2 way with the black and then turn a couple of silver in there!!

I can tell by the color and shine. If you did not use CP on the finish the wrap would almost turn dark cranberry on a black blank.

Where you are adding the silver trim band you are using a silver inlay. Try wrapping the silver and then the black over it (rather than as a simultanious inlay) so the spacing between the black spirals is bigger showing more silver. Maybe just 3 to 5 spirals of black spaced over the silver length rather than every other thread.

To answere the specific question you asked , don't use the silver as a guide overwrap. the metallics aren't really strong enough to be used as overwraps. If you want the metallic silver overwrap for color , wrap with the regular nylon first , put a coat of finish(not too heavy) that will give you strengt6h , then overwrap just for the metallic color look. Finish over everything then.

Oh , BTW , learn to work with all A size thread under and over and triumming guides. . Its harder to do but everything looks better when done.

Mike I have made the mistake before!! Idid orange wrap that turned Brown!

Salt I am going to try that underwrapd of silver, sounds easier then simultanious!
I have used all A before and it does do a better job, But my hands are so bad from diabets that I have a hard time feeling the thicker threads. That is why I don't use them. It will be ok for me.

Thats D size thread isn't it, or your camera takes extraordinary pics. If so no amount of coating can cover up the threads and make it look smooth. Why not try size A. Put three layers of thread over the top.

If you only want the silver for color you might also consider using a foil or metalic tape, wrapped with black on either side. I've done it with gold and it came out very nice.

.02.... I like my metallics to be the under wraps, this allows a cleaner look for the end bands if your going with the same color end band(silver under). It would also look good with a 3 or 4 strands of metallic burgandy as a center band. The over wraps I'ld do black with 1/4" burgandy on the end leaving your end band.

In my opion I think rods with thin end bands are much sharper looking then wider end bands. If you choose to go with a different color end band then do your underwraps so they stop just past the guide foot then lay your end bands longer, your over wraps will go over the two colors to make a sharper and smaller looking end band. *One important key to doing it this way is to keep good tention finishing your wraps. You can do end bands in just two strands this way. Its more work but well worth it once you see the finish product.

Really I think I am going to try the under wrap of the silver and then over wrap with the black.
