OK, so if you haven't heard we bought a boat this past fall. It is a 17 foot Smokercraft.

I am looking to get some "boat rods" and I figured some folks on this list could help me out. I am particularly interested in 2 different setups and I need advice on the rod, reel, line, hooks, lures, basically everything for...

1) A chunkin rod

2) A wireline jigging rod


With regard to the wireline setup, I am referring to whatever would be needed to fish in or near Boston Harbor. I mention this because I am used to jigging on sandy bottoms on the cape. It is my understanding that jigging around the harbor is a different matter entirely (don't make contact with botom) and requires a slightly? different setup.

Also, if you have rough estimates on what the cost should be, it would be helpful too.

Van, yes I think that your chunking setup is perfect and I will probably go that route but I'm just looking for more ideas especially for wirelining.

Hey Mike, when you say wireline for jigging, do you mean a wireline trolling setup? Just curious because you really shouldn't need a wireline setup for jigging. You really can't beat a Penn 113H on a Penn Senator rod for wireline. It'll stand up to much abuse. I've used downriggers and stainless wire line in the past. I really don't troll that much anymore but when I do, I've gone over to the same setup with leadcore. I seem to have better luck with less gear loss due to hangups. Too much rocky bottom around here for real deep trolling.
If you're just jigging and chunking, I'd go with something much lighter though.

flatts, for wire line rods make sure you get a guide that can withstand the abuse of wire. mainly, carbaloy guides. fuji made a guide recently called silicon nitride. these have better frames and will take more abuse than a carbaloy, which tend to have the ring break from the frame after a while, but most rod manufacturers are not using sicnit's yet. definitely go glass. when trolling wire, sensitivity is not an issue. customs rods are usually the best in this area, but some production rods are out there. seeker and star rods makes some nice ones. you need a proven reel andthe only one i would suggest is a 4/0 w/ the metal, chrome spool.

drifting/chunking - lots of options. it depends on how heavy of a weight you plan on fishing. you can go glass or wire. guides, go with fuji ceramics and fish some kind of braid! you want to feel every touch on the bottom. you can do glass, graphite, or composite. for a reel, you have several options. again, it depends on how heavy a weight you will be fishing and the depth you will be fishing. 4/0's, jigmasters, newells all are good options.
