View Full Version : Computer blew up...
JohnR 12-19-2003, 09:42 PM I'll be limited on getting to the site and e-mails over the next few days as I'm in the process of determining if I smoked my CPU or Motherboard... So while I have a fleet of computers (and data backed up), I'll only have limited time to access it easily....
Other than that - might hit PC show in Warwick Sunday - anyone goin' ?

JohnR 12-19-2003, 11:57 PM Well - if you are a geek and are current in MB recommendations, I'm looking for recommendations: http://www.striped-bass.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11696
Also - any recommendations for a cheap video card?

NJTackle 12-20-2003, 11:54 AM Did someone say geek thread???
Katie 12-20-2003, 10:33 PM hey i'm practically a geek.. all i ever do is mess with the computer.. HTML,etc. And i have had my share of name calling....
Saltheart 12-21-2003, 02:24 PM Best MB's have traditionally been Abit and Asus. FIC also has boards that are geared specifically for AMD chips.
You may be surprised that a MB CPU combo is not much more than just the MB these days.
Best place to shop for hardware is www.pricewatch.com
JohnR 12-21-2003, 04:27 PM Saltheart - been using pricewatch for years :) ... I got something to run for now and once employed, I'll build a rig.....
leptar 12-21-2003, 08:33 PM Ya the great ole pricewatch... they need a direct link to
http://www.resellerratings.com/
Pricewatch will find that reseller with the best price.. but sometimes it's a headache and a half just to save a few bucks here and there...
Alot of resellers use pricewatch to push older reversions of products just to make room for the new stuff..
jugstah 12-22-2003, 09:15 AM Pricewatch is lame. It's usually rigged to gear most good prices towards the select few retailers who help support their site. And often times, what you see isn't what you get.
A good videocard to get would be anything from NVidia. I own a MSI NVidia geforce4 MMX card, and it's good enough for internet/mail/games.
And I get my daily share of "computer addict" comments. :)
Saltheart 12-22-2003, 09:27 AM Pricewatch is a resource for getting you in the ballpark for price and for suggesting some suppliers. The lowest priced supplier is not always the best.
As in all things , "Buyer Beware".

Yep ...
I've found that for 80% of what I need I can get it from Axion or Newegg, the other 20% I'll get locally or thru other online places.... I decided to be cheap and get an all in one MB for now. When I'm working again I'll get more & better (plus I need a craptop for the site anyway)...
jugstah 12-22-2003, 10:49 AM NEWEGG.COM is a great retailer, and their prices are usually within reason when compared to prices of other retailers. I've not had any problems with any of the purchases I've made through them, and their return service is pretty decent if you stay on top of it.

Newboater 12-22-2003, 11:13 AM 1. ATI 9200 great price at pricewatcher. Good card.

Hehe.. another Tom's Hardware reader.....
My computer must be BFI's land fill then... I have a AMD athlon xp 2500+ Overclocked to 3200+ all on a Nvidia2 chipset with a Nvidia GeForce FX 5600 Ultra and i'm running BETA drivers, with no crashed and no lockups.
jugstah 12-22-2003, 05:19 PM I'm running 3 PCs, all AMD with NVidia cards and drivers, and never a problem. As a matter of fact, I've had more issues with ATI drivers than with Nvidia.
Newboater 12-22-2003, 05:44 PM Great
Nice to hear other people are not having problems.
The Ole Sarge
JohnR 12-22-2003, 06:20 PM I don't have any Nvidia GFs (and the MXs on my boards don't count) but I haven't had any problems with the AMD/NVIDIAs yet - uni drivers or not. There WAS problems early in the W2K days when using Nvidia cards butr I haven't had anything specific in a while....
All my machines are AMDs until I go back to some Dual Celery 500s (err 622s :D ) on some BP6s
I have many BP6s with celerys
A couple IBM Intellistations running dual 333s
An old Asus with a 533
1 ECS with a XP1700
The main rig :hihi:
Another 1.2 Bird
And a whole lot of hot swapin' drives...
But I'm looking for some 7200rpm SE drives on Ebay if they are ever cheap enough... I think I need a RAID 5 box :rollem:
Slipknot 12-22-2003, 09:01 PM  GEEKSPEAK:smash: :p
jugstah 12-23-2003, 11:23 AM Old Sarge, try installing the VIA 4-in-1 chipset drivers.. might help if you are still experiencing problems with nvidia/amd motherboards.
leptar 12-23-2003, 06:56 PM ACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats asking for troubles man... the 4in1 drivers work for VIA chipsets only. If you have a VIA based MotherBoard... and it's an older version.. You are going to have issues with the newer drivers. There is soo much code they used to work around bugs in early chipset versions..... You need to get the Proper Drivers for your MotherBoard and Proper Drivers for your Video Card.
Just tell me what motherboard board your using(brand/model), what speed your processor is, and what brand/model the video card is also. I'll do the foot work for ya.. i have all the links to reliable websites... and if not i can get it.
macojoe 12-24-2003, 12:54 AM I have a NIVA GForce, but I have a Pentium 4, and it has always been fine.
jugstah 12-24-2003, 09:20 AM Leptar, worry not. The computers I own, are not old. I'm a junkie who likes to keep his computer on the cutting edge. :)
leptar 12-24-2003, 03:37 PM Newboater (Ole Sarge) never mentioned what kind or how old his computer was?.. SIS.. Nvidia.. AMD.. VIA(many and many different versions.. KT,, apollo.. apollo pro.. mvp4.. mvp3... the kx's and kt's..) Different 4in1's for different VIA's.. just cause they said it's new for all chipsets .. well hehe you know... trial and error baby!
I owned every via that came out.. i totally regreat being on the cutting edge of technology.. having to have the best Laptop.. fastest ram.. newest CPU.. best motherboard...so on and so fourth... It can get pretty expensive... i could have bought my F250 crew cab(new) + renzetti rod wrapper + all the fixings.. and maybe 3 or 4 van staals with the computers/parts/monitors i've owned..
If you want a real depressing reality check.. look at all those receipts..You might want to stop when you've excedded what you have made in 1 year.. and you still have half a pile of receipts left......
ok i'm going to go cry again :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :bc: :bc: :bc:
