My main rig blew up. Seeing that its more important to be able to work I reformatted another machine to build before serious diag on my main machine... The way it is acting is HW not SW so I'm suspecting CPU or MB but for the moment I'll assume MB...

Main machine:

Asus A7N266-E (Nforce1 w/IGP)
AMD XP1700

So, if I need an MB I'll want something that supports hopefully to 400FSB for future CPU upgrade but it needs to be backwards compatible to 266FSB to use my existing CPU.

Now I used to O'Clock before it was fashionable but don't really need to anymore (maybe a little). Anyone have preferences on current MBs? I might spring for another NForce(2) with the IGP or something with no IGP and toss a budget card in too (so sugestions there are good too). Main thing is I need to be somewhat cheap about it. Can't afford right now to go big $$...

Thanks....

John, if your going to buy a MB, check out Newegg.com. I've built several rigs and they have the best prices and outstanding customer service. You usually receive your order in 2 days.

JohnR,
what errors are you getting?
what was your last configuration with overclocking?

if your looking for another board...

lemme ask something why oc with onboard graphics..? thats just asking for trouble..

before you execute your MB or CPU check your RAM.. what are you running 1600 or 2100? single or dual?

that board is a decent board..

btw what you looking to spend? you can get a new MB with CPU and a decent video for like under $275

Without a doubt get an NForce2 Ultra platform. These newer Ultra versions can do the 400 bus guaranteed, though many of the older non Ultra ones could hit it also. I am running the Asus one right now but also have 2 of the Epox versions. There are many combinations of the chipset so you can get your pick of features including decent onboard video. If you don't need anything crazy graphics intense they will suite you fine. The ones without all the fancy options come pretty cheap. If you want a vid card, I have a 32mb GF2 Ultra with dvi output I could sell you for cheap. Let me know.

The pc would reboot while running and the time period between when it crashed shortened... I was checking the bios setup, restored defaults then was resetting. Then I checked the CPU temp and it was at 49 - ouch - so even money the problem is that I I've smoked my CPU. Even though my old Volcano was turning 6500RPM (at 40 decibels - been meaning to get a quiet one anyway)...

I was using the onboard graphics as I was more easily swapping between an old Matrox Dualhead running twin 17s ot the OB driving a single 21 ;)

'Course, I can test the CPU by swapping in another Athlon but then my second machine comes offline  which means I'll need to use one my 500s, Dual 333's, or Heavans to Merdratoid, a single 333 :eek5: :buds:

Oh, I wasn't overclocking as ocasionally I bump it up to see what I can do but I'd rather have the reliability. I haven't Oclocked seriously in a few years - rather geek systems or tune my reels, hehehehe. But I was getting the C300As to over 5, and even back to single Pentiums :)

Leptar - that's a nice OC, tough temp - whay CPU cooler you running (and how loud is it?)

Scoobe - that's one I'm considering...

vantec 80mm fan... not your typical one... this bad boy is pushing 84cfm... the heatsink is a solid copper Thermalright SLK-900(A) and i'm using artic silver 5.... i noticed a 2 degree F drop using 5 vs 3.

bought this stuff from www.HardcoreCooling.us

i really wanted the 92mm vantec that pushes 114cfm... but the 80 is working just fine!...

as for sound,,,, hehe after a few days.. everyone will get used to it i guess.. i have a huge case thats pretty thick so the noise is dampened a bit.. i have 4 80mm fans on the case and a enermax 500w power supply with dual fans.

lemme find a mic and i'll post a wave for ya to hear.

49c aint too hot to smoke a greenie... i've seen them run like flawless @64C water cooled... heck.. i saw one hit 72C once... heh

40 dba... omg how do you know its even working... LOL

mine runs at 55dba or so.. alot less noise outside of the case..

On the noise - my Computer room is next to the toddler's bedroom :rollem: so noise IS a facotr

This XP is one of the brown cores, older than the newer green cores (they make 1700's in the green core ??? ).

I pulled all of the cards to bear minimum, cleared the CMOS, can get it to boot and can get into dos on a floppy without crashing but when I do anything on a drive, either clean test install of 2K or trying to boot the regular XP drive it does the reboot... Gonna ATTWEPT a BIOS flash for chits & giggles....

AMD put out 5 different versions of the 1700+.... LOL
2 different tbreds both sprouting 2 different versions and 1 palomino.

http://www.overclockers.com/tips00173/

decent reading if ya rusty or want to know more about Athlons.

the noise could be compared to that of an older fridge.. when it's in cooling mode.. my case is an antec clone.. that heatsink is the bomb.. a good 92mm fan will fit.. if you don't need the extreme air flow get a 60-80cfm fan it should be in the 30's for dba.. :)

another thing is :P way way over looked.... check your power supply... I took a Dell P3-1ghz in trade for like 100 bucks in parts.. this guy said the hd works and the burner but the machine is toasted... it sat for like 2 months.. plugged it in and got a reboot cycle it would post then reboot,,, post then reboot... i unplugged her... looked at it.. popped in a cheap enverio1 400w PS it booted and i installed xp and gave it to my brother.. hehe...

I got the Pali

Enermax Whisper 430 (ye, whisper makes a lot of sense with a 40 db Vantec :smash: )

Antec SX840 case (PS went to a different machine)
Couple of 80s - one pushing and one pulling plus the 2 in the Enermax...

I'm Rusty but not entirely out of the game - and been a member at Overclockerz since they switched to the same BBS we use at S-B :D

Thanks & I'm gonna likely take you up on that offer :) ... Thanks!

--- Got it running still but it still blows up somewhere during a boot (well passed POST) or during an install (during W2K AFTER format).....
kmode_exception_not_handled stop 0x0000001e setupdd.sys - nothing in KB - gonna swap CPUs (once cooled) to verify and memory

AND FOR THE FIRST TIME, I SHREDDED A %&:af:&#$ CDR in the drive :af: :af:

You have Bios issues if your getting any exception_not_handled messages.

you might also have a bad drive.

if it was MB/ram/cpu you'd get a BlueScreen with something or other like

STOP: 0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x00000000, 0xb2000000, 0x00020151) "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION"

Thats when you know you smoked the MB/CPU/or RAM... hehe

macojoe,
it's not really that bad.. think of the MotherBoard as a Rod Blank.. and the "guts" as guides, reel seat, thread, ect....
it's almost the same in that sense.. just you cant use your computer as a fishing pole.. unless you get really creative and have extra money to spend.

How do you think i feel when someone mentions a fishing blank # or talks about guides with little led lights that sing.. hehe little humor there...

I guess i got lucky to be bounced from job to job.. i got to see/use alot of whats out there...but kinda sucks when your filling out an application and me being only 30 having worked many places in all different fields.. You should see the looks i get from employers..they look at me and say wow but then they squint a bit then look at me like i might be a joke... done it all.. from janitor, commercial fisherman, maintenance mechanic, food handler, shipper, reciever, data entry, field sales for Kirby Vacuums, production supervisor, assistant Fireman(low pressure 13psi) boiler operator, roofer, laborer, pipe fitter, painter, welder, worked at a machineshop to help a friend out, hardware consultant/network assistant for a semi-conductor company in the taunton area, now i've landed a job as a bandsaw operator, sad part is i never went after any licences,, so i'm a Jack-of-all trades master of none.
