View Full Version : Winning Tog
Westport Jeff 12-29-2003, 02:21 PM My son received a letter this past week from the Division of Marine Fisheries informing him that he won the junior division, tautog catagory, in their annual tournament.
Needless to say he is excited.
Fish was caught in the Westport River, mid May, on a seaworm while fishing for stripers.
The tog was 23" long and had an 18" girth and weighed 9.1 pounds. Sure felt like 15 pounds to me.

Slipknot 12-29-2003, 04:52 PM :D Congratulations!
Westport Jeff 12-29-2003, 05:16 PM Thanks,
Fishing is a great father & son sport. We are on the water every weekend, rain or shine, in our 16' tin boat. There are (lousy) days in the spring and fall where we are the only ones fishing on the Westport River. The day he caught the tog it was cold and rainy.
We both tie our own flies. We both are looking forward to building our own lures.
Slipknot, thanks in advance for putting together Plugfest.

fishaholic18 12-29-2003, 11:13 PM Nice Tog. Must have been a good fight. I love catching them. Eatin' them too.
Westport Jeff 12-30-2003, 09:11 AM He was using a 6' ugly stick with a Shimano 400 reel and 12# test. He had his hands full.
The fish was caught in a deep marsh undercut. Thankfully there was only mud on the bottom because these guys head straight for the bottom. He also caught a second tog I guess weighed 7 to 7.5 pounds.
They have a face only a mother could love and they are good eating.

Westport Jeff 12-31-2003, 09:20 AM GB:
Westport is in Mass. next to Little Compton. The Westport River is comprised of the East Branch and West Branch. We fish the East Branch. We catch most of the tog the areas around Ship Rock.
There is a good boat ramp and plenty of parking. We buy an annual pass. I think the daily charge is $5.00.
The larger fish are in the river in the spring then as the water warms, around the end of June, they move out of the river to the rocks and rockpiles outside the Westport River entrance.
I see that you are going to Plugfest. I will bring a chart of the river and show you the spots.
Wow!
Fish in the Westport River?...
Sure got me thinking!!!
You're not serious are you?...
Geesh Greg, count me in!...

That Chris L guy told me that the Westport in Ct. was the place to fish:smash: And to think I could have been fishing just around the corner from home all this time and saving all that gas!!!!! Thanks alot Chris I knew I should not listen to some long haired hippy freak:( you owe me a few drinks at this years winter fest for all the gas I have waisted driving all the way to Ct. because of you.
