View Full Version : FISH
Clammer 05-20-2001, 01:55 AM just got in /cold and blowin-- but 2 32' fish,1 30 & 1 28 plus a small one/ broke in the new rod right// the problem was [is] I dropped 6-8 fish tonight/ I bought those circle hooks because everyone says they give the fish a better chance of not getting hooked deep/ I never lost that many fish in one night/ threw those fancy hooks in the trash as soon as I got to the dock/ I'm going back to the same hook Ive pretty much used the last 25 years/
If its not broke dont fix it//
GOOD NIGHT
JohnR 05-20-2001, 11:11 AM The problem with circle hooks is that you swing and miss if you try to set up on a fish in the conventional hookset... I was using a 6/0 Gamu and hooked all 5 of this mornings fish (up to 32 inches) on the lip or withing an inch of it... The big momma (OK, it was a little under 20 pounds (I think)) broke me off on a piling >( ... It was my fault too 'caue I was thinking how it would look breaking in the grille tonight...
Fisherwoman 05-20-2001, 04:43 PM Glad to hear the news guys, looks like the bigger fishies are moving in down there. Hit the cape this AM only 8 small schoolies. Baicaster fished local and NADA. We need those warmer temperatures soon. Water on the cape is still cooler than normal this time of year.
Got Stripers 05-20-2001, 06:12 PM I don't use circle hooks with my plastics, but I did give them a try last year when dragging eels. The KEY IS DON'T SET THE HOOK, because if you do; fish gone. With that in mind, I have to say I'm very pleased with the success I had last year. My largest with the circle hooks (4/0 I think) was a fat 35 lber off Cowen's Ledge.
It might not be broke, but that doesn't mean the new stuff should be ruled out so quickly.

Tight lines.
Dad of Squid Kid 05-20-2001, 06:38 PM I agree with FW..We need some warmer weather..It was very slow in Onset & Buttermilk Bay last night and this morning..A total of 13 itsy bitsy ones..And about as many hours...:(...Doing dance to the sun gods tonight...
JohnR 05-21-2001, 10:35 AM I do believe in circle hooks and do use them when using cut bait where the fish will pick up and run - just need to remind myselft to reel instead of a traditional hookset. I have not liked them with eels and will not use them and I don't believe they would work well on a live-lined herring (I honestly have not tried).
Mr. Kav 05-21-2001, 11:47 AM I SWEAR BY THEM FOR CHUNKING FOR TUNA. I AGREE WITH ALL OF YOU, NO HOOKSET, JUST REEL.
Clammer 05-21-2001, 03:06 PM I guess Ill try again
John I was using them with live buckies, SOOOO
Also I lost quite a few buckies to one hit ?? same deal//
Good plugging tides for the couple of hours around sunset tonight //
Saltheart 05-21-2001, 03:57 PM I like the looks of a 10/0 Gamma Octopus for the buckies. 7/0 live bait are fine if you are hooking them at the dorsal fin but if you are casting them out and hooking through the snout or in mouth out eye corner or through both eyes , I like the big gap on them Gama 10/0. Good strong hook too. Sticky Sharp. Quaker Lane had some.
JohnR 05-21-2001, 07:13 PM Clammer, missed your call. I didn't get home 'til 7:30... Tomorrow night maybe?
Clammer 05-22-2001, 12:23 PM John, well try again, after getting that order, I hit a corner the tide rips past, first three cast w/ the popper f/w likes == 3 fish then it was broken off, switch to my favorite -caught more, came in and the cove is full of schoolies, super high moon tide ,bass in the eelgrass smashing silversides, them moved to my favorite spot //plenty, should be the same tonight around 9/930 let me know
