View Full Version : Life is good and the stripers are back
Got Stripers 05-20-2001, 06:05 PM in my favorite spots. Took a friend from another board out for his first striper trip, he passed the test and the new Lund 1890 ProV I'd give an A+; man what a sweet ride in conditions I would have been soaked in short order in the old Tracker Tournament V-17.
It was great to be back at my favorite striper spots and I managed 20+ fish, with maybe one keeper. Note to myself; measure and mark the 28 inches on the gunnel of the boat...lol. Drew caught some nice ones, for someone that's used to catching those little freshwater varieties; including the one in the pic.
Had to swap a trolling motor battery to crank the outboard around 9:30 and run in to buy a new cranking, but at least my starting problem is now behind me. Then I cut off the second transucer cable this year with the new Minn Kota RipTide trolling motor prop. I've got to figure out some way, which I thought I had by making several turns around the shaft with several wire ties, to insure there isn't any loose transducer wire for the prop to catch.
I'm am so pumped for a brand new season, does anyone know how to make it drag, instead of fly by like it usually does.

JohnR 05-21-2001, 09:32 AM I'm trying to remember if I know that spot by looking at it from shore :P !!! You should have taken a picture of your ear-to-ear grin while you were out there...
Does anyone know how to make a season drag? Not exactly, but if you fished 20 hours a day, 6 days a week, it would seem longer (but you already do that, right??)... I always found the hardest thing was waiting for the cows to arrive and then it would go by just too fast. Now I can't tell if I'm more content or more deranged by the season ??? }> ;D :P :o
Got Stripers 05-21-2001, 12:25 PM You'd have to have really good eyesight or superhuman powers to wade to that spot; since it's almost a half mile offshore. It's my go-to spot in early spring and it always holds fish early. It's also one hell of a spot when big rollers are coming in because I can tuck the boat in behind a pair of ledges that bust up the swells and my boat sits in behind in the wash, with only about 60 foot to any one rock/ledge or prop killer behind and to the other side. The boat will be sitting in the froth, rising up and down as the waves come and go. Just a killer spot to sit and catch a bunch of fish as they sit in the eddy behind the ledges picking off the confused bait fish being tumbled about.
You will have to come up and I will show it to you :), along with some other sweet spots youv'e fished many times before. Next time out I have to force myself to go after some mackeral for the freezer, because with the tons of pollack around yesterday; the macks must be in the area as well. It's just real hard to stop striper fishing to go do stupid vertical fishing...lol. I could have jigged up some pollack and dragging one behind the boat, but I assumed it was unlikely to be bothered by the size fish I was averaging yesterday. They were tough fat little fish, with a couple that probably would keep.
Give me a call when you can free up some time or if things heat up down your way, because I'd like to expand my horizons down that way for the fall :).
