were the original surfsters designed to swim on the surface or sub surface? in the fall i made about a dozen surfsters with differant type woods. some swim about 3 to 5 feet deep and others were on top. the ones on top swam well but popped out in moving water .or when i tested them in choppy water.i thought with the slpoed head that they should swim sub suface.thanks

Some did and others didn't. The Creek Chub line had quite a few variations on body size and hook arrangement. Way back when when you could still find a few in the box I fished a couple bigger ones and they gurgled along right on top, I also fished a smaller one of the three sizes they made and it dove right down. I you can find it look for the 2nd edition of the Creek Chub Collectors guide they have a great section on surfsters. A lot of builders build a deep diving Danny Body and put a surfster lip on it and call it a surfster. They ain't the same, the real surfster body is way different. Check it out. BTW, I still have a beater large surfster that I fish with now and then.

How did the ones that floated sit in the water? Nose slightly down like a pikie, or flat?

the way the Lip is designed U would think that they would have to be surface swimmers.With little or no weight they would be excellent swimmers in flat water.The slopped head will help sometimes to keep the plug in the water on the pull of a wave.They made some of the larger models (7400) that weighed 4 oz.My guess would be a trolling plug as the body didn't have the bulk to float the weight.Now to troll that plug U got to have the speed right or my guess would be it get buck nutty an would pop out of the water.That Lure really dosen't make much sesne to me.As mister Flap stated they made just about every variation of this plug U could imagine.Almost like they couldnn't make
all users happy.I don't bother with em When I can make plugs with the Z lips that fit my needs better.they sure where pretty though.

When you adjust a Danny to swim on top, isnt it basicly a Surfster :eek:

the ones i made that floated ,also sat more like a danny than a pikie. i will add a bigger slug in the floaters, i weigh them like pikies the thru wire thru the slug below the lip. my intent was a subsurface swimmer. my floaters didn't have as much of a roll as my danny's

Krispy, wouldn't the differences in lips cause a different action on the plugs ?

Have to agree, the "plug porn" book is great. Lots of good stuff. Also some tips on making the plugs. The x-ray shots of the pikies are great.
