Its cold and I was daydreaming of a time long ago.
So here is my story about fishin' the river with my brother.
What time is it? 2:30 AM. gotta get up, they'll be risin' when the sun comes up. Did I put all the stuff I need in the bucket? The ice is in the milk jugs in the cooler. Wheres my boots?
OK everythings all set, time to go. Stop and get some coffee, not too windy, maybe a good day.
Get some seaworms, 1/2 flat shoud be enough.
Pull into the lot, just a slight ripple, the lights are reflecting on the bay. Back the boat in,get it off the trailer and tie to the dock. Park the truck/trailer. Walk down to the boat, she starts right up. Its dark, just the first glint of false dawn. A few pogies poppin', making little splashes here and there. Untie the boat and head into the channel, up the river. Pogies at the bridge, snag a dozen and head out into the bay again. Ok the rise has started, big blues tearing into the pogie schools, A couple 10 pounders and then, zing, a real drag burner, get the gaff. After 10 minutes a 32 pounder , almost got away, good thing I palmed the spool, that bouy was mighty close. The rise is slowing, snag and liveline, another blue. 3 blues and a bass this morning in the channel, not bad! Put the rod down and fire up the engine. The breeze in my hair is refreshing. A 5 minute ride to the cornfield across the wide river. Put on a popper and drift with the current. The top of the rocks just starting to show. Cast, Cast again, A third time..nice boil, mised the strike... cast again, wham...12 pound blue.. nice. Cast again...nothing. Start up the boat and bring her around for a second drift. Cast, cast again, and again, bam, zong,, nice fish on, hope it doesnt get in the rocks, keep the pressure on, she's comin' nice fish, get the gaff. 28 pounds.
Ahh life is good. We both have a nice keeper and a few blues. The water on the bay isn't too rough, want to try going to the island? Ok I've got enough gas, take the poppers off and rig up those small Pacific bass hooks, put on a 4 ounce sinker. The fish we caught this morning are in the cooler and theres still some room. Start up the engine and "head out". Theres a few boats
going by, its about 8:00. OK we can see the bell bouy, the island is alive with birds, the bottom is comming up, looks a little rocky, lets try here, put out the anchor. Ok put on a nice fat seaworm.. let it go to the bottom. Immediate tap, set hook. Nice double header of 12" scup.
Bottom fish for 1/2 hour.. 15 scup, 3 black sea bass about 16 inches and one 'tog about 6 pounds(and a few throw backs about 10 inches). The seaworms go fast. The wind is picking up, lets head back in and fish off "the point", we still have those pogies we snagged this morning, maybe we can catch another blue or two. Its a nice day, some clouds but not to windy, in the mid 70's on the bay. Anchor up off "the castle". Put on the wire leader hooks and a nice pogie fillet. Set out 2 rods. Start chumming. Sit back in the
chair and wait, 5 minutes... zing.. fish running. grab the rod, set the hook, 13 pound blue shoots out of the water and tailwalks. nice.
Don't let it get caught in the anchor rope line.. get the gaff...nice blue. well the pogies are gone as well as the seaworms, ready to go? Yup, so what did we get? 5 blues, 2 bass about 15-20 jumbo scup, 3 black sea bass and a 'tog. Not bad. A 10 minute ride back to the dock, get out the cutting board and the Dexter.
Nice thick fillets. Thanks Billy, I had a great time. I'll drop off a bass fillet at mom's. Great. Got about a 45 minute ride to home. I'll
call you before the weekend. Great fishing
