A bottle plug is an excellent nitch plug. The only options seem to be Superstrike and Gibbs (which I don't like since the re-design).

Just curious as to why custom plug builders such as Beachmaster, Habs, Tattoo, Salty, etc haven't produced any for the market. Are they too time consuming to make and try to make a profit? I think there would be a market for a great wooden bottle.

Definitely see a lot more use of bottle plugs out at Montauk and it sounds like the NJ guys use them a lot. Must be a cultural thing, as I don't see them in widespread use in New England.

It needs a little scoop action on either side of the face. That is to say I think it needs to roll back from the line tie loop on both sides and it needs more of a "backboard" above the line tie area. Like most bottles it really needs current to make it work better but it does swim.
When the Pikie fever is over and I'm satisfied with needles and cigar nosed swimmers I'll make more before the spring.
BTW after the basic head was there I used a 1" hole saw in a drill press to cut out the spoon/lip. Worked on it from there manually.

Another option in the bottle plug arena is made by North Bar Tackle on Long Island. It has both a scooped out face like a bottle and a darter slant to it. Quite unique and it also has a patent on it. Not too many are made but the quality seems to be very good.

You wouldnt think, but they use them allot up in maine.
During a storm or very rough water they dig very well into and have a nice swim to them.

I got a few bass on them one night up there during a storm, the guy I was fishing with was using them too and he was doing good also.

Like fww said though, for some reason not many people use them in Mass or RI. They work though thats for sure.

Is that what those funny looking plugs are for???? I thought they were poppers with the weights and belly hook installed on the wrong side!!
