Anyone got pics of originals or their own that are fairly faithful to the originals? Someone I know asked me to try to make some. Said he loved to use them years ago but has no more.
All I know is basic...say 2-3oz danny like body with a round/bull nose. Can't seem to find any info searching the web.

I crawled into my boat today and dug out all my old plugs. I have 6 that bear the Cooper name. The biggest one is 8 1/4" long. I always thought this was my only Goo Goo Eye. Can anyone help me out with this? I have had a lot of luck with the big one, and now I am afraid to loose it. This is the one I am trying to reproduce. I got one of the new models, but it would not swim for me. I used maple, cedar, and mahogany and now I am trying to get some ash from Heritage Woodwrights. I'd like to hear from someone who knows Cooper plugs.

seabuggy, i really don't know much about them, but i was given an unfinished blank, it was primed, i sanded to bare wood to see what it was made of , i am pretty sure it poplar.

seabuggy, I wouldn't make plugs out of ash, or poplar for that matter. Sometimes these older plugs are made from old growth wood with much tighter growth rings than you can find today, that feature can have some bearing on how the plugs behaved. wood is good. Pine will work, I just wouldn't use the eastern white pine that is common around here, try sugar pine or stick with cedar. You are lucky to have some originals to go by.

would U use 1/4 inch luan on the floor of ur boat:D

Nib, if it were exterior grade, and i put several layers of mat roven mat over it , yes i would use 1/4 inch luan for the deck in my boat. actually that is how i am going to re deck myStieger Craft. foam underneath then 1/4 ext. luan then ten layers of mat.

Didn't say that Slip, u grumpy or what :p

Poplar is a pretty bouyant wood, density is similar to Pine but slightly harder, mills easily and if properly sealed it makes a great wood for plugs. That's all bubba, never said u knew nuthin. Those crazy buggers are poplar is all I pointing out :)

It's my opinion that poplar is an interior wood and has no place in plug building even if sealed properly. I learned this thru experience.
I ain't grumpy and I don't know it all. Define sealed properly.
Maybe your buggers have some space age sealer that will make them impervious to water. Maybe you use it because it is a little denser and cheaper than pine, but I don't think plugs used for fishing will last long made out of it. Of course it won't matter if ya snap them off like we do :smash:

I'll tell you, just the high humidity from down south will rot poplar if it is not properly treated and cared for.

Planned obsolescence Slip :D

I dunno but think you might be surprised who else makes plugs out of poplar too...I know of one other large guy that is using poplar. If ya bugger plug ever rots I'll replace it for ya :)

Now you gonna get me accused of hijackin another thread...

I got a big bucket o beaters down stairs, I take one an I'll hack it an sand it an toast it an cut it half an grindit down till dust an mix it with my dinner......then wait till mornin....if it floats its soft wood, but it sinks, it's gotta be hard wood.

thats a very scientific approach cape,
what if it binds you up, does that mean the fiber content was too low, and would explain your general mood .
