All right.. I'll admit it, when it comes to pikies, I'm a googan, a waabit, a greenhorn, etc...

heres my question.... when do you use it??? jig man sent me one last season and I used it off and on, but I never knew when it was the perfect time... thus, I didnt catch chit with it..

Is it a herring thing?? or when large menhaden show up(if they show up:smash: )
Also, when would you chose a danny over a pikie??? or vice versa??
Goose's green needle thread got me thinking about plug styles and when to go for them...

Pikies don't catch fish. Using them is a futile waste of time.

So send that pikie to me for proper disposal. :bshake:

Good question... something I ponder alot (not specifically about pikie's) but the where and when... I have spot lures, ie always fish plug A at spot X.. etc... but nights where they are all around and not touching chit, I try and defy convention... ie go real big when small bait is around, or go white on new moon, dark on full moon etc... pays off more than you'd think.... sometimes convention is BS :smash:

oh and WW.. I'll tell ya where to stick that pikie... Eben knows to send it to me, its local postage anyways.. :D

Well , I fished these things hard 2 years ago to see when they work.
in front of a herring run late when there dropping.
When herring and Shad are around.
You got to know where to toss these. and what Time of Day
Huh Wee Wee:smash:
also colors. top colors are blue silver,
Yellow and olive, gold
a good plug under a full moon is Yellow or white with a pink stripe.
Rocks like these plugs along the Islands in May and june.
But You must swap out to a danny to find out what they want.
remember action?
So diffent action may be it.
I feel In may these are very good, But the danny may win over the pike. for the rest of the Year.
think day time with these plugs and remeber
Daytime = yellow or solid white with some pink Hue's and variants of other Hued plugs May top out over others.
Depends on the situation.
And Blue and silver is a good Day time color

Cloud cover
Blue silver
olive gold
black purple
Black gold silver and some others that I made Just for this type of aplication.
Night Time
Black, black gold silver, blue silver untill they eat needles Mid June at night then alt and swap out along with other types of Plugs.
You got to know when to do what when and that will only come with experiance
WORK THAT PLUG
what You think just casting it out and reeling it in is going to catch fish!
This is where the art form takes shape!
You must now know how to articulate that pikie with a pause and if they are eating it Dead style
As In making the plug stall and pulling the tail up in the aire and back at it.
If You fish herring and Pogies for a good 15 or 20 Years You will know what I am talking about
Its all in the action and how You present it.
Im back out.....................

Ok I thought enough about pikies and its too deep for me .

I use spinner baits to catch pikies in the 1 to 2 oz size colors black , grey ,yellow and white . biggest pikie to date is 18.5 #s just 11#s off the state record . I also ice fish for pikies with big suckers and large minnows on my tip ups and my heavy jigging rod .

Classic muskellunge plug turned bass plug when the guys got tired of throwing tin.

We all should thank James Heddon, and the black bass boys down south.

I think I asked this in another thread but I forgot to follow it so here it goes again...

Does the sloped/scalloped head of a Pikie affect the action at all, or is it just cosmetic?

this is just me,
definitly effects action, makes the nose dig and puts the tail in the air by the force of the water movin over it.
also by cuttin the mouth like that your takin away alot of wood in the front makin the tail go even higher and the head is tilted down because its missin that extra "floatation" towards the front.

my 3 cents.

All though I already knew all this stuff. BM's post should get transferered to the "How To, FAQ" Forum. I know someone that might want to refer to it now and again.

I like to run em down the banks of the canal like herring or mackereal do If i see actual fish do it I'll change up and follow suit works pretty well
Colours depend on the day and weather tide may have a little to do with it but basically mackeral cooured how could you go wrong
(dont forget to oil them)

always thought of the nose slope as an extension of the diving plane. ;)
