View Full Version : Trying to buy GPS on Ebay
Vectorfisher 01-22-2004, 08:39 PM There must be something wrong with me, I have researched quite a few GPS units and know what the new models that I am looking at cost, I have put respectable bids on numerous units for the last 2 months and I cannot get near one. People are paying brand new prices and on top of that have to pay shipping and take someones word for it that the unit does work.:af: :af: :af:
WHATS THE MATTER WITH PEOPLE!! I cannot justify paying top dollar for something I dont have my hands on .

If you can wait a month or so, go to the Boston Boat show and pick one up there. I bought a boat at the Providence show two weeks ago and didn't buy my electronics yet. For the most part, the prices at the show were better than Ebay's. I've been on Ebay myself bidding only to loose out. Like you, I noticed the prices in Ebay were no real savings. I hope this helps.
MakoMike 01-23-2004, 08:06 AM Vector,
With e-bay you have to be patient, lots of people will overpay, but once in a while you get a killer deal. I bought a Garmin 2010C last year for $1,400, everywhere else they are $2500! One trick, if you just want a good, but not killer deal, is to contact the seller privately and offer him a reasonable price if he'll end the suction early. I've done that several times with various items, including marine electronics.
Be patient.
I just picked up a brand new Garmin 320C for a little over $400.00 including shipping on Ebay. Now I am waiting for a deal on a 182C....
Bawana 01-23-2004, 10:50 AM Ive found a lot of the E-bay auctions for marine electronics to be shops that are doing advertisments.I wanted a second screen for my furuno nav-net 1732-c nt radar/ plotter. I was finding rediculously low prices on whole radar unit that the sellers had(0 ) feedback and most bidders were also with (0).I started checking the bidders that had feedback and one that I lost for a 1832c nt unit was some old lady on MT Washington that never bid on anything except for knitting and crochet items. The prices they were winning the stuff for was still way below retail.I started asking if these were real auctions but never got any replies. The stuff I knew I could win wasnt any kind of a bargin but was like you said almost full retail.A lot of the stuff is old outdated Pre- DGPS never mind WAAS.I think there was a lot of shill bidding to drive the prices up.I saw one unit the 1900cnt that was a demo and someone supposedly won go back up for sale by the same seller after a couple of weeks and when i questioned it He said it was a different unit.I wondered how many demo units for one item he really had??????
Mr. Sandman 01-26-2004, 09:21 AM Ebay is hit or miss...mostly miss for an item like this. There are too many buyers like yourslef looking at those types of items...Look at the number of hits on some of those pages!
I would suggest you check out on online dealer with a respectable rep. I have used several, got great prices on new gear. Here are a few I have used for various items...
good luck

Sandman,
Great Post! The trick there is print out the order page from one of the above online vendors, then take it down to your local West Marine or Boater's World and tell them you want it price matched. 9 times out of 10 they will match or beat the advertised price. Now you have bought the product locally, should you have a problem.......:)
I will need electronics in the very near future and I will use this method to save $$$$ off of their advertised prices....
MakoMike 01-26-2004, 01:37 PM I've bought some stuff from Borkenleg dave, never had a problem, though it did take an loong while for my cartridge for the 2010C to show up.
