I did the unthinkable today, I did this for my on going reaserch, but am now going to share with you.

I cut three plugs in half , no they weren't any good thats why I picked these.

one cooper...bluestreak...cap'n bill's.

what I found was this ,,,the bill's was made of sugar pine...the cooper was cheap eastern pine and the blue was made of top shelf mahogany

the cooper and bill's had no sealer at all. where the hook holes, screw eye's an lips were, the pine was jet black an on it's way to rotting.

now! the blue on the other hand had paint in ALL the holes an lip as well...paint was in the wire hole too, from one end to the other. then on top of that I found the clear coat through out the inside on top of the paint....there wasn't any sign of water getting into the wood anywhere.

it also looked to have 2-3 coats of primer on it as well, very thick. the other two I had to look very close to see any at all..........that is all/////

I see a dead plug :eek: :eek5: :err: Good info. I'm guessing they dipped the blanks into the primer?

looks like oil to me, but outside was sprayed with an air brush and it's thin....my guess would be why the heavy under coat.

Maybe dip in premium exterior primer thinned with mineral spirits.
That would do seal and prime?

Capesam, have you ever dipped plugs in primer or top coat? it would seem to me that the paint would never dry being applied so thick.that paint on the bluestreak looks real thick, wonder if its a two part epoxie paint.

I've dipped plugs before in oil, only problem was when I went to hang them up to drip, the paint ran out the hook holes an just made more of a mess..so now I just use exterior oil poly an soak the plugs in that for a min. after that hardens I sand, prime with thinned down rustoleum flatwhite in my air brush. I can put on as many coats as I want because it drys fast..after I'm happy with the build up of the flat white, I hang for the nite to really dry hard, then scuff with a green pad an paint my colors on[oil]. then wait a few days for the oil to cure an the flumes to leach out, then comes the scuff coat of the same poly I used the seal with. then a coat of sys3 thinned with acidtone abit so as not to get a big build up of finnsh,,,,,note; we don't have rocks here, just sand. if I was doing a 50 plugs at a time I'd switch over to urathane auto paints an clear coats. or lacquer.

Cape, that is basicall y the same method i use, except i don't use the epoxie.

My guess would be that the lead slug was molded on the wire (note the beveled front on the slug), and they needed the extra depth to run the wire, butt to nose, to form the eye... then pull it back.

or so that it was adjustable by pushing the weight in you change the balance and how the plug rides in the water.
Just my guess.
