I've got cabin fever bad this year...The ski trips have been fun but I am dying to get the boat in the water already and do some fishing... I have a dozen boat projects i want to tackle but it is an ice-age out there...looks like we have a few more months to go...

I am tyin fluke rigs...dreamin of doormats and rigging eel leaders for bass.

I wonder how the herring run will shape up this year?

The Boston boat show is in a couple weeks and that for me marks the comming of close to spring. There's usually a couple days in late March to get the boat stuff together and I'm ready to go out anytime the weather is 55-60. Can't wait.

You could always try a little ice fishing to take the edge off.
That way you can still "hit the water" and possible catch some
decent freshwater trophies.

The ice in Cohasset harbor is 1 foot thick. I saw a lobsterman walking out to his boat in the middle of the harboe pulling his dingy! (skiff)

Do you snell your fluke hooks or do you tie direct with a polamar like knot?

I have done both and both work IMO but think that tying direct is a little better because the there is no line along the hook shank to ge chewed on by the fish or damaged by plyers. But all of the commerical rigs seem to snell. I find even a clinch or polamar does the job even on bent eye hooks.
What do you guys use?

I prefer to snell, but if I'm making up rigs while out fishing I'll usually tie a palomar. I agree, one doesn't seem a lot better than the other.

I use Palomar,so they won't chew the snell like you said. But I have snelled them in the past without a problem. Do you rig single or double hooks. I've been doing singles, doubles seem to be more trouble than it's worth.

My fluke secret... I only use this in deeper water when the bite has been consistently bigger fish (ie not many shorts)
My fluke hook of choice is a 2/0 or 3/0 trebble... look at a fluke's mouth when the inhale a bait... when they shut their mouth all three points catch just inside the jaw... I dont miss many fishing this way; In shallow water, lots of shorts I fish a smaller single hook....

Also re: the snell thing' all my eel rigs I snell, the rest I tie... why?:huh: I dont have an f'ing clue... habit I guess.....

I snell all tog hooks. Most hooks tied with mono I use Trilene knot, braid always polamar. I tie almost all my leaders and hooks at home leaving a good end to which I burn the ends.

Got my hair cut today...(I know the barber is a big fisherman)...He asks me how I'm doin...."oooooook I guess, doing any fishin? (with a smile, its snowin like hell out)
