View Full Version : zara spook weighting
I wanna make a few of these... I made one and I kind of guessed about the weighting of the thing because I dont have one in front of me to check out.
can anyone tell me the gist of weight distribution... weight in the belly, or tail, is it supposed to sit verticle, or horiziontal, sinker or floater, etc:D
Sorry about these annoying questions:rolleyes:

Jigman 01-29-2004, 05:24 PM Weight in the tail. Should sit tail down in the water. Something like a 10 degree angle. Water line at the front should be behind the curve of the nose. That will give a nice glide/walk the dog action. You can load more weight in the tail, but you'll have to work it faster and you'll lose the glide.

Canalman 01-29-2004, 05:35 PM Eben,
I took a sea spook apart and there is a shot of lead in the arse that weighs around a quarter ounce.

ThrowingTimber 01-29-2004, 05:40 PM Funny you should ask. I just... well I just. Check ebay for pflueger ballerina. 4 1/4 in length and weighted towards the tail. If you find one with a good pic, you can pretty much eye the measurement for the weight looking at the plug. ;)
blackeye 01-29-2004, 05:41 PM heh
ballerina
hey vic, long time:D

Christian 01-29-2004, 06:13 PM that plug is sweetness:)
boy wonder, when I make more I'll send you one
blackeye 01-29-2004, 08:20 PM ok batman-but you could just give it to me in person:D
Jigman 01-29-2004, 09:26 PM Have not done them with a real flaptail, but have done something similar with a colorado blade on the tail. For those, add a shot of weight in front of the hook to help counter balance the plug. You want enough lead to get the plug to sink, slighly tail down. Start the retrieve as soon as it hits the water and crank slow. It will V-wake on top with the blade gurgling and the nose bobbing up and down some, real sexy like. Didn't get the chance to put them in front of stripers. Did get a couple in front of Hybrid Stripers and Smallmouth. Repainted them a couple of weeks back to repair the damage :D

Jigman 01-29-2004, 11:22 PM Looks like I lied about how the blade ones sit in the water  :smash: Dropped one in the tub a few minutes ago. It sinks, tail down, almost vertical.
Jigman
hmm...well when it warms up I'll go down to the dock and see how she sits, wiggles and such...
thanks for the thoughts jigman...
Crafty Angler 01-30-2004, 01:15 AM Ballerinas?
Hell, I got a few of them NIB in Uncle Crafty's Tackle Den - also got some Rebel Sea-Gars NIB - wanna trade, Eben? :D
Trade??? moi? The yankee swapper??
yeah, I'd consider it once I make up some more for the 2nd batch. I'm also gong to add a small swivel in the tail so the flap will do its thing better...Thanks Jigman for that idea.

Thanks Piemma,
I'm going to make a few more... If your into it, maybe we can do a plug trade??
piemma 02-01-2004, 01:31 PM Eben
Love to. Let's talk next week. I am leaving on another &^&** business trip tomorrow and will not be back til Friday. I'll Pm you then
RIROCKHOUND 02-04-2004, 09:45 AM Eben,
I weight em with two shots one near the tail, one just past the belly hook... have done tail only as well, but the second slug (both just under .25oz) keeps the tail down a bit and plug rides a bit lower....
my 0.02 anyways... I've only made a few and they are fat boy spooks....
