What's everyone's all time favorite album?
Mine has to be one I've been listening to since it came out in '73, and I never get tired of it.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon

Close seconds are Neil Young - Decade, Nirvana's Nevermind
and Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick.

How could I forget. I am not being pretentious on this one---Beethovens middle period and late period string quartets. Laugh all you want, point you finger and make fun of me, I don't care. These are some of the great works of music in the Western World. Great Snelling and reel cleaning music----or just finest kind music for the mind.. :)

I have a lot of favorites, here are some that I always seem to go back to

The Who - Quadrophenia (listening to it right now)
Boston - Boston
Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare
Pink Floyd - The Wall (Dark Side of the Moon a close 2nd)
Aerosmith - Get Your Wings (their best album IMO)
The Black Crowes - Shake Your Moneymaker
Edgar Winter Group - They Only Come Out at Night
Humble Pie - Smokin

Hey, gf, you cultured individual you. I had no idea. :p

Yeah, I like a little of that long-haired stuff too, I just don't have very much of it other than 'greatist hits' Vivaldi, Chopin, and the B and B's - (Ludwig von and JS). Come to think of it I've got Water Music, too. Other than Flight of the Valkyries I can't think of any Wagner that does much for me - although I don't tell my wife that (who is German-American).

I got so many CD's now I sometimes forget what I've got stuffed away in the racks.

I'm glad to see "Fillmore" show up on this list-mine as well. An incredible band having one of their best nights ever and the truck was there to get it. There are tons of live recordings out there, but none come close to that one.
Picking 3 or 4 albums is easy-come on, pick ONE. Gets a little harder, eh?

Back home from work, adding to the list.
For living composers I think much of John Adams work is first rate; he's American, which is rare in this field. Harmonium, a choral work by him, is well worth having.

Debussy orchestral music is a must have.

Mahlers Ninth, a massive two CD piece, that'll blow the soul apart is highly recommended. I'd get the one conducted by Karajan, which Grammophone has on CD.

J.S. Bach---Cantatas 170, 82, 159. Get the one with Janet Baker singing. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful, even though I understand zero German.

Here are three for Lapinski. I don't want him to think I'm a weirdo. Both Chemical Brothers albums 'Dig Your Own Hole' and 'Surrender,' are great for a heavy electronica sound. And Roni Size 'Reprazent,' which is, in my opinion, the greatest drum-and- bass album ever recorded.

I have pretty diverse taste in music...here are my favorite album(s):

Led Zeppelin: Houses of The Holy
AC/DC: Back In Black
Ozzy Osbourne: Speak of The Devil
Black Sabbath: Heaven & Hell
Jimi Hendrix: Smash Hits

Dead Kennedies: Fresh Fruits For Rotting Vegetables

New Order: Substance

Billy Joel: Greatest Hits 1973-1997

George Winston: December

Sergei Rachmaninov Piano Concerto #3. Soloist Vladimir Ashkenazy with Kirill Kondrashin conducting the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. March 1963 recording. NOT fireworks, just pure artistry. I have three copies of this work, one set on unopened vinyl.

Sergei Rachmaninov Piano Sonata #2 (Op. 36). Vladimir Horowitz, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1980. Un-friggin believable fireworks.

A few others, but that should do it...

I could start a whole new thread on my favorite SINGLES of all-time...

John,

To be honest, I only started liking the late 80's early 90's English stuff when I was spinning these singles at a nighclub (did my own mix show). Stuff with 120 bpm (beats per minute) that could be beat mixed - like New Order, Depeche Mode, Erasure, etc.

Never really go into the darker side of the then "alternative" stuff (too collegey). I never liked Morrisey - not b/c his music is so "gay" so to speak but very repetitive. I never heard so many major thirds in so many songs in the same key! :yak:

Don, women weren't on the radar screen at the time. :laughs:

I was addicted to 12 inch vinyl singles. Had a subscription to the DJ Times and the now-defunct Dance Music Report. That was like Penthouse to me. Record pools up the ying-yang. Had to get a larger van just to accommodate all my mobile equipment when I wasn't doing club gigs. I spent most of my time mixing up tracks in my bedroom. My clothes reeked of fog machine juice. My club lighting doubled for my study lamp. :hihi:  :bc:

Still Hendrix -

I saw him live with the Experience at the old RI Auditorium in 1968 - the place caught on fire while he was playing and there was a stampede for the doors - I ran up to the emptied out front row (Jimi kept playing) and stood on a chair 15 feet away from him watching him play "Purple Haze" while firemen were running for the burning chairs in the back - :eek5:

Saw Clapton and Cream there a month later -

What a great idea for a thread. I had a ball going through my collection and reminiscing. As others have said, impossible to pick one. In fact, I had a hard time narrowing it down to ten - so I added an honorable mention section. Here they are, in rough chronological order, and a little on why:

1. Phil Ochs - "Pleasures of the Harbor". Probably many have not even heard of him. He was a protest singer in the 60's ( a la Dylan), but switched gears for this album. The title cut is one of the most beatiful ballads ever recorded.
2. Neil Young - "Harvest". Stellar from first to last cut. The culmination of three tremendous albums in a row. "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and "After the Gold Rush" could easily have made this list as well.
3. Steely Dan - "Can't Buy A Thrill". The first album that I ever bought. Steely Dan was huge for me in college.
4. Pink Floyd - "Dark Side of the Moon" What more could I add that hasn't already been said. Close the door, switch on the black light, turn on the stereo and light up. Aahh - UMass in the 70's.
5. YES - "Yessongs" A live album that doubles as a greatest hits. This is sort of cheating because it is a three disc set. Another great album for the dorm room - are you detecting a pattern here?
6. Joni Mitchell - "Court and Spark" Required reading for any music collection.
7. Springsteen - "Born to Run". You were considered hip if you were into Springsteen before this album. Afterwards he belonged to everybody. This LP put him on the cover of Time & Newsweek. And the rest is history.
8. Little Feat - "Waiting for Columbus". Another live album that serves as a greatest hits at the time. The band at its peak before the death of Lowell George. Never the same since.
9. The Smiths - "The Smiths". Hard to pick one out of so many great albums. This is their debut. Let the mopeing begin!
10. U2 - "Joshua Tree" Already had a number of good albums under their belt, this one brought them to a new level.

Honorable Mention:
Beatles - almost any album, espercially the early ones.
Doors - "Morrison Hotel". "I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer".
Led Zepplin - "Led Zepplin II"
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
Jethro Tull - "Thick as a Brick".
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - "Brain Salad Surgery"
R.E.M. - "Murmur".
Allman Brothers - "Eat A Peach".
Thin Lizzy - "Jailbreak"
Traffic - "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys"
Stevie Wonder - "Songs in the Key of Life"
Waterboys - "Fisherman's Blues".
Woodstock - Original Soundtrack (from the 60's, not the recent stuff)

And just so you don't think I am an old fart:
Pete Yorn - "Musicforthemorningafter"
Bush - "Sixteen Stone"
Cavedogs - "Joyrides for Shut-Ins"
The Strokes - "Is This It?"

Please don't ask me to come up with a favorite single. I think my head would explode!
