View Full Version : 1st cast
Christian 02-23-2004, 10:34 PM 1st cast to fresh fish not twinks(holy crap small), but schoolies(20"+ but getting bigger 30"+). what are you gunna send out there? and with what?
me,
ideally i want to be throwin a popper, wonderbread, with some blue on the top like 1.5-2oz on my batson 1088 with an abu of some sort (esp if there on top= YAY!!). but im guessing if i want to catch anything im gunna tie on a smoke ledge runner jerk on a jighead.
RIROCKHOUND 02-23-2004, 10:36 PM Big wood to match the herring...
Maybe a christian wonderbread :D someday...

missing link 02-23-2004, 10:46 PM prob this :)
bud8fan 02-24-2004, 01:16 AM First cast would probably be somewhere out on the south shore on a warm spring afternoon after a few days of mild weather!
At the end of the line would probably be one of the following!
bud8fan 02-24-2004, 01:18 AM Or possible this reliable bait?
BasicPatrick 02-24-2004, 01:53 AM Pearl queen cocahoe minnow , 5/8th oz jig head
tlapinski 02-24-2004, 07:05 AM i already know the day i'll be out. pretty consistant year to year. just over 1 month away, i'll be throwing a 3.5 oz pencil popper at som 20# bass like i have the past few years. i can't wait!
BigFish 02-24-2004, 10:01 AM 1 ounce white w/red Gibbs pencil popper......search and destroy!:uhuh:
Notaro 02-24-2004, 10:12 AM Seaworms and clams. Sorry, guys, it's a force of habits... I'm going to start off with ledgerunner plastic jigs (small offering) and see my luck.
rwilhelm 02-24-2004, 10:20 AM I am going to try the 6" Storms.
scarecrow 02-24-2004, 11:49 AM Live Herring

Rappin Mikey 02-24-2004, 12:06 PM Bass Assassins, 6" Albino Shad, @ 50 days from now I should start seeing some 20 pounders my way.
scarecrow 02-24-2004, 12:17 PM Found some of those lures for sale.
Let me know if you want in, Im gonna buy a nice amount of them.
Rappin Mikey 02-24-2004, 12:19 PM yup
RIJIMMY 02-24-2004, 12:58 PM Sping is fly time for me, not fly fishing, but using what I now call the "Matunuck Special". Casting with a fly on a wooden egg rig.
I know most of you prefer plugs, but I have never been fishing with this rig and been outfished by someone fishing a plug, ever!
This rig works year round but seems to do best in the spring.
Deep Hole, here I come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
rwilhelm 02-24-2004, 01:04 PM RI JIMMY - I will be using that technique also. I will see ya there.
RIJIMMY 02-24-2004, 01:18 PM RW, it will be easy to recognize me, I'll be the guy catching all the fish.
:p :p :p
scarecrow 02-24-2004, 01:20 PM Ya see ya there too.
Just made a batch of about 10 of them.
For this srping.

How do you rig that up??? I haven't heard of that one yet
RIJIMMY 02-24-2004, 04:28 PM DadF, you use a wooden egg from a craft shop. They're roughly a little larger than a chicken egg. Drill a hole down the center and paint it. Thread the hole with about 8 inches of 50lb mono leader. Tie barrell swivels on both ends of the leader. This is for the weight to cast the fly. Tie one barrel to your line to your rod, on the other end tie about 18 to 24 inches of leader with the fly at the end. There are some variations of this, some folks put screw eyes in the egg. With the leader through the egg, it allows you to feel the hit without the fish feeling the weight of the egg.
You can cast pretty good distance with this, you work the fly with a twitch like bouncing a jig. I also use this with small jigs instead of a fly in rocky areas, its works very well. .
My Dad used this rig for years and swears the only thing he caught more bass on was a live eel. He has caught more stripers than anyone I have met.
The Dad Fisherman 02-24-2004, 04:40 PM Thats pretty slick. Kinda of like a slip-sinker rig only for top water. I'm assuming the swivels are bigger than the hole to keep the egg in one place? I'm going to have to give this a try. I know a few good rocky areas off of Gloucester where this would work extremely well.
Thank you for the info
RIJIMMY 02-24-2004, 04:49 PM Yup, the swivels are larger than the hole.
This really works well with jigs too, it keeps them off the bottom in rock areas.
Joey T. I use a 7/0 gamakatsu octopus hook for livelining, works great. Keep the run to a minimum and 99% of fish are hooked in corner of jaw.
RIJIMMY.... I cant agree more.... but I got something a little different hanging off of my egg.... and it aint feathers...
see ya there... and somewhere else:D
Jimbo 02-24-2004, 06:07 PM Just so I'm clear, the egg not only keeps the fly or herring off the bottom, but you use it versus cork to increase your casting distance?
THe egg serves 3 purposes..
1- to give weight to cast far when needed.
2- it keeps what ever you are using as a lure from sinking to the bottom on a slow retrieve.
3- it helps you see where lure is when you are retrieving it.
if you make one make sure you rig it with the fat end of the egg facing the lure... it will cast better.
missing link 02-24-2004, 07:01 PM link jr won a couple of those eggs at the plug fest , what is that nail for on the bottom of egg it's kind at an angle ? oh ya baby I feel a hit ... fish on.... nicccccce fisssssssssssh later , link:cool:
RIROCKHOUND 02-24-2004, 07:03 PM You hook the jig/fly whatever on the nail.. when it spashes down it falls off... increases the casting distance... have some poppers rigged this way for windy days...
of course i didnt make em so who knows?
Jake made those (if they are the white ones like I got). I think he uses them for sandworms too
missing link 02-24-2004, 07:12 PM ya the white ones, brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh later , link
Vectorfisher 02-24-2004, 08:08 PM All depend on what the morning brings for my first cast, could be live lining a herring or if I am running out and see fish breaking a nice popper or pencil to the "outside" of the school. See I was watching video at the TFCTFN:D
denport 02-24-2004, 08:13 PM This year brings the return of the blue topped silver bottomed big a$$ popper. Had a keeper jump 2' out of the water and get hooked last year on the first day. I'm not one to mess with a good thing.
Moses 02-24-2004, 08:20 PM Most likely a 5 or 6" Pearl storm at a rver south of me, hoping it's by 2nd week of April.......
RIJIMMY 02-24-2004, 09:15 PM Jimbo, The egg is basically to fish a fly with spinning tackle. It gives it weight to cast. Since a lot of bass areas are rocky, you can also use it to fish small jigs to keep them off the bottom.
Its sort of like using a teaser without the plug.
You'd be suprised how large a bass would grab a 4 inch fly.
Mike P 02-24-2004, 09:17 PM I'd throw a jig or a weighted plastic just to keep 'em honest--never know if there's something bigger than 30" laying underneath the little guys up top ;)
I'd also try to throw it around the edges of the school and not towards the middle.
missing link 02-24-2004, 09:20 PM heres a pic of the eggs
Vectorfisher 02-24-2004, 09:29 PM Nice eggs Link be careful not to break em:smash:
tlapinski 02-24-2004, 09:31 PM is it just me that sees the lack of common sense in targeting the early season schoolies? nothing like damaging the future stock! :af:
macojoe 02-24-2004, 09:32 PM I start the season with a load of macks for the freezerand chum buckets.
Then it is off to some live herrin early am on my way to the fluke grounds.
This will go on till the bass move from the vinyard sound and i will be Fluking most everyday in june.
Then as july comes around i will be getting sick of Fluke eberyday and will start some live scup and wire jigging.
This will go one till the aug Blues set in were i will slow down a little.
Spet, will be a hole host of things, Fluke Bass Scup Beach fishing Cod, thur Oct. and after Hollween the boat will go to bed for another winter.
Thats it. Nothing special

thefishingfreak 02-24-2004, 10:53 PM first cast---------- 3 oz. snag hook.
second cast------ live herring.
Goose 02-24-2004, 11:13 PM Live herring or a smack-it.:hihi:
Jimbo 02-25-2004, 10:23 AM RIJIMMY, This post definitely has me intrigued. I've used cork to keep live or chunked bait off the bottom, but not like a slip sinker like you describe. Can you post a picture of a typical fly you'd use, or describe the pattern or bait you'd be matching?
Notaro 02-25-2004, 05:30 PM Newell guy, I used gami octopus hooks for chunking and they work better than eagle claw circle hooks. But now some people claim that daiachi red demon circle hooks produce basses. I tried it, but don't see the difference. What do you think?
I would stick with what has worked for you in the past. I use the gami's
Slingah 02-25-2004, 06:45 PM here are some of what I'll start with in spring, along with those deadly storms First cast.......

Yup, I am staying that way. Sometimes I use smaller gami octopus for chunking if I don't see any big bass around.
rocketman 02-25-2004, 09:52 PM Me: I'm gonna throw my Bassmaster Danny that I got from him at Plugfeast '04. Cuz I been dying to see how it swims.
Wish I had a wonder bread to try.;)
fishaholic18 02-26-2004, 09:07 AM What kind of paint do you use on your eggs so they don't water log and sink:confused:
RIJIMMY 02-26-2004, 09:28 AM I'll post some pics tonight of the egg rig and some flies.
I use whatever paint I have, usually external housepaint or primer, gray or white.
hooked 02-26-2004, 11:22 AM Probably a smilin' bill jig with a 5" curly tail grub.
I'm gonna throw a herring mambo my first cast
Saltheart 02-26-2004, 04:32 PM By the end of April we will be seeing some fish in the 20 to 30 inch range and will be catching them on small jigs. Usually a white bucktail with a small white curltail for me.
Brad S 02-26-2004, 06:19 PM Just a suggestion: You might want to grind off the heads of those nails sticking out of the eggs so that the eye of the jig or fly doesn't get hung up.
I've read that sometimes fish will hit the egg, so I plan to attach a hook to the rear eye of the egg-- or maybe I'll just use a popper as the egg and put a nail in it to hang the jig/fly on, that way you've got the surface and sub surface covered, or maybe the commotion from the popper would attract them to the sub surface morsel----- doubles would be exciting.
COME ON SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
