Thanks a lot for sharing these great collections. Im curious as to how much effort and time it takes to amass such a substantial collection ?

Oh, and i found that wearing the extra large size pampers or huggies helps a lot when viewing this thread . I just finished my 2nd box.

I was a wierd kid. When my parents, brothers and I came to the cape for our annual vacation instead of getting a t-shirt or a pail and shovel my father would bring me to a local tackle shop and let me buy a lure. He never ever tried to influence my purchases, he just let me buy what I wanted. I still have the first one I ever bought. It was that 2-3/4 oz. Blue Pencil Popper I posted in the group of Gibbs Pencils and that was 1963 at Red Top.

Over the years my interest has come and gone and come back again. I was active in the late seventies and early eighties but had bad experiences with some "serious" collectors and when my two daughters came along and the new house etc., there was no time and no money. Of course the hobby has taken off since then and prices are still way out of whack as far as I am concerned but as they say something is only worth what someone is willing to pay and some people will pay anything to have some of this stuff.

I am at work right now, have been since 7 this morning and will be till 10 tonight. I still have plugs to post. Beachmasters, Gibbs polaris's , bits and bobs of other stuff plus a ton more classic homade stuff. I would like us to go to 600 posts and 7500 hits that would make this a classic thread. Adam R., VB and others still ahve more to post also, so hang in there it's a comin!

If anyone else has a couple to show don't be shy, post 'em up for the world to see. Thanks in Advance, Flap.:D

I may be a little dense here. Are you saying that by my showing Beachmasters ( some of, not all) I stepped over some invisible line? Gibbs is in production, Lex is in production.I don't get it and I am getting annoyed. Ah to hell with it then, somebody always gets a bug up thier ass sooner or later. That was my last post then, don't want to hurt anybody's feelings.

Just want you guys to know....this thread inspired me to finally turn my first plug yesterday! Thats right, the very first "BigFish Bait" has rolled off the assembly line and I am hooked. It came out pretty good as far as turning it, its a pencil popper equal in size to a 2 1/2 oz. Just gotta finish it, prime, paint, thru-wire etc. It came out great though, wish I had a digi-camera to post pic....when I finish it I will have Slingah take one with his and post. Thanks for all the great plug pics guys.....I got my bib on and am ready for more!

PS, about 20 years ago for 5 years I semi-pro fished weekends from Va to ME . From Black Drum to Bluefish/Tuna and just about anthing else that paid out . up and down the coast. I guess that's how i got started

PSs I started collecting about 20 years ago, ice fishing tilts/ I have ton's.
Then went to freshwater stuff/ surforeno's/ and misc baits.
Then bobbers/floats :) then licenses/badges/etc
Then bambo rods/creels/ bait buckets/ etc
About 8-10 years now saltwater crap

I went to the RISSA show today. My pic for best new plug was the new Gibbs color called Herring, Wait to you guys see it.
When you see that on a needlefish you will meltdown, It's that good. And a danny like that can only be lethal,

Saw some little Tatoo swimmers in yellow and pogie that I just have to get ! The Tattoo darters were awesome as well, I just cannot get those little swimmers out of my mind that Joe Lyons had that Tattoo made.

Salty had his Dannys and they were sweet but that new electric needlefish was way coooool. That sideways Danny swimmer was the bones, Scott, if you screw up again like that call me I want it!

Habs selection of needles was outstanding and the idea of the medium Danny with only one belly and the tail hook is really going to make a big difference. The eel needle I was given for my collection is gonna be too tempting and it will get fished and I know just the time and place. Always a pleasure talking to John, he is a super guy.

Saw John R. walk by while I was chatting at the Gibbs booth with Chalie Cinto and Dennis Ryan. Charlie has some great stories.

Anyway it was a good show for RISSA's freshmen effort and can only get better. Now I am looking forward to the MSBA show so I can get the hooks from Salty that I left with forgetting to buy!

I wish it was a Habs but it's one I made. I have never seen the Habs Eggs for sale anywhere so I made a copy. It's not a real one but it will have to do. It's a good idea, I bet it works well when there are small menhaden around. I hope this one swims for me:(

No, something much worse. I am at work! I will be posting a couple tonight. Got some homade stuff that a guy made just after WWII when metal and stuff was still in short supply so he scavenged his old Creek Chubs and turned new bodies and recycled the hardware. Very interesting.

Also, on the 11th I will post a tribute to my brother John. He was killed in Vietnam on March 11th, 1969. He used to make poppers for Stripers and Paul Kukonen sold them in his shop in Worcester for John while John was a senior at Burncoat High School. I will show the plugs I have left that he made. They are nothing special to look at but they are my most valuable possesions. I often wonder what he would have been making today if he had come home..............:(

BigFish
03-08-2004, 01:47 PM
Looking forward to the 11th Flaptail...sorry to hear that news. Tell me something though...how did your brothers plugs work at catching fish? I bet they slayed!:kewl:

Flaptail
03-08-2004, 02:01 PM
He sold a hundred or so so they must have been okay. He used birch dowels and screw eyes etc., that he bought from Spags in Shrewsbury MA. He hand painted them and used nail heads and ring binder hole reinforcers for doing the eyes. I f, God forbid , my house ever was burning down they would be the thing I would try to save first and that's the Gods honest truth.

BigFish

Stan Gibbs made two of these for a Offshore fisherman in Ocean City Maryland. They were for hi speed trolling for tuna etc. if you fished the eye end first and could be fished off an outrigger with the hook free of the holder and tied on to the skinny end. This is the only one left that I know of,
