View Full Version : Too much thread hijacking
Saltheart 02-25-2004, 09:36 AM I thinkm there is too much thread hijacking going on. I don't mean we start out talking about a reel and end up discussing a rod. I mean we start out talking a reel and end up talking about who's dog poops more.
Foolishness can be fun and for the most part you can post about what you want to be foolish about in the scuppers. On the main board , its a shame to see a topic go up and get 12 responses when only 4 are truly responses and 8 are soem sort of foolish bull.
Anyway , if you are guilty , lets be a little more considerate , especially in threads where a specific question is asked and specific answeres can be given.
chris L 02-25-2004, 10:00 AM seems this is a concern on all sites lately . well if it wasnt for foolish bull then I wont have much to say . reading is good !
Oh well !
Moses 02-25-2004, 10:29 AM I second that sentiment Saltheart. Might just be because I'm newer to this site but seems when threads go a stray, it's either due to some "private" joke only a handful are privy to or some one on one communication starts which probably could be handled better using PMs when it varies off the subject. Just addng my two cents.....
Steve K 02-25-2004, 10:57 AM Well said Saltheart. One of the things that separates this board from the others is the lack of chest beating and pot stirring going on. It is refreshing to read the sincere questions and replies given by the people on this board. As long as members here continue to do this and refrain from hijacking threads it will be worthwhile to spend time on this board. I know that most of you have seen the deterioration in the quality of the other boards and I would hope that the same thing does not happen here.
Steve
Krispy 02-25-2004, 11:06 AM I agree w/ Saltheart and Fish_Eye's earlier statements. Theres seems to be much more "fluff" recently, and some members who seem to feel the need to post on every thread. It really takes away from the board, and there are specific forums geared to that need, such as the Scuppers forum.
Bob Senior 02-25-2004, 11:13 AM I agree with Saltheart, but I think the problem is really the weather more than anything. We're sitting here at our PCs instead of chasing linesiders, and we get a little flaky. And then the silliness starts. I'll be the vacuuousness declines considerably once the weather breaks cuz then we'll have something substantive to talk about.
Some of the other sites are way farther out in space than S-B is, IMHO.
tlapinski 02-25-2004, 01:30 PM so i am walking from my car this morning to the front door of my work and i see a bird fly past. the bird lands on a tree branch and sees an owl in one of the upper branches. i had never seen a bird crap himself before that! wait, what were we talking about? :laughs:
DaveS 02-25-2004, 02:01 PM Rgr that, too much "off topic" stuff going on in most posts these days. John, make me a mod and I'll keep things in check:smash: .
GaryK2 02-25-2004, 04:16 PM How bout those Patriots!
Goose 02-25-2004, 04:43 PM Thanks Mike
Saltheart 02-26-2004, 09:38 AM I'm going to keep bumping this up to the top for a while to make sure everyone is aware!

capesams 02-26-2004, 01:18 PM thought I was grumpy..sticking to the facts gets boring fast too.. if you want to say hi to someone do it in a pm.....if someone is showing a new plug they made, other's can an should show theirs....but do get off the subject in the other direction, that sucks too....I think you'll find all this is happening because of all the new an younger member's that are here now...[anyone under 50] an us older men? don't care for all the chitty chatty that has nothing to do about anything.
Saltheart 02-28-2004, 05:30 PM Back to the top for a few more days.

Jonny Bolt 03-01-2004, 02:48 AM Good to see someone with power on the board finally take recognition :btu:
JohnR 03-01-2004, 10:10 AM Guys & glas - makes sense to me, we have venues for the non topic / off topic - non fishing stuff. That's what the scuppers and the other boards are for. The main forum here should remain more fishing related than anything and while "NO thread" hijacking would be way too much, mild thread hijacking is certainly ok and common on a discussion board (hence discussion) but when the hijacks are too severe and far too common, that can get a bit over the top.
Good to see someone with power on the board finally take recognition What's that supposed to mean?
BigFish 03-01-2004, 10:12 AM
Jonny Bolt 03-01-2004, 01:45 PM It means its good that a Mod. or Admin. has finally taken notice, and wants to put an end to the hijacking.
Krispy 03-10-2004, 12:41 AM bump
BigFish 03-10-2004, 08:43 AM Lighten up guys will ya.....everyone throws in some good natured ribbing once in awhile, and I mean "everyone"! That includes many of the longtimers here, so come down off the high horses and when it does happen, address it then. Just chalk it up to the time of the year and the lack of fishing and move along. Just my $2.50's worth.
Krispy 03-10-2004, 11:34 AM 2111psts / 350dys = 7 psts per dy 7 dys a wk 365dys yr = alot of hijacking. please move along
BigFish 03-10-2004, 12:21 PM Whats your point Krispy??? I am a firm believer in coming to the point!
BigFish 03-10-2004, 12:35 PM Krispy....if you are accusing me of thread hijacking.....ya might want to check yourself before a huge boulder crashes that glass house your livin' in! I refer you to the "Favorite Pizza" thread in Scuppers......thread is about pizza next thing you know, you are talking about clam chowder! Not that I mind Krispy but I think we are all guilty of it from time to time, show me someone who is not and I will show you someone who does not post much. :fishslap:
Jonny Bolt 03-10-2004, 12:42 PM Come on guys, be cool, we are all just Striper lovers.

chris L 03-10-2004, 12:54 PM too freaking much !
does anyone know how to crochet here ?
no chris I dont but was thinking of taking a class wanna go????:smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :laughs: :laughs: :laughs:
Saltheart 03-10-2004, 01:58 PM "so come down off the high horses and when it does happen, address it then"
Sorry but I have decided a different approach.
My approach is to point it out to people as a problem and hope that with the added awareness , they will deal with it so i don't have to. So far , I think most people have responded well to the suggestion.
I agree everyone does it occasionally , and thats cool. the problem occurs when it starts to become a way of life to jump on every post like its a stage to showcase your wit. . That spoils what has made the site great over the years.

Knit me a pair of waders. :hihi:
Sorry Mike for jacking your thread...again. :laughs:
Just another two months to go...
JohnR 03-10-2004, 02:16 PM The fishies will be out soon and this will be less of a problem. It cracks me up (well, maybe just a little) when I see people buttin' heads on the boards that would get along just fine meeting in person
BigFish 03-10-2004, 05:23 PM Not meaning to bump heads with anyone guys, particularly Saltheart and Krispy, I will admit to being a half-wit on occasion (not a whole-wit), sometimes there is an opening in a post or thread where there is a funny occurence or comment where a joke might be kind of funny. Its just like every day conversation and it makes it fun. I know what you are saying folks, and nobody wants a nice informative thread to get sidetracked and ruined because of someone jumping on and turning a thread about "A Herring Run" into a thread about how their truck broke down on the side of I-95. We have all done it, and it is well intentioned mostly because people are enjoying the site. Hey someone tried to hijack one of my threads the other day,(don't know if anyone saw it?) but I put the brakes on the no good hijacker because that was what he was doing, literally! Best people here on the site "police" this type of thing, I agree, but we are all aware of this thread......my point is if you are gonna keep bumping it up, why don't you just "sticky" the darn thing so we don't keep tripping over it.:btu:
By the way JohnR....I met Saltheart and Krispy at the TFCTFN and I must say they both seemed like pretty good guys...."for thread police".:laugha: :hihi: :jester: :jump1: :biglaugh: :kewl: :uhuh:
chris L 03-10-2004, 05:45 PM why do we drive on a parkway and park in a driveway ?
BigFish 03-10-2004, 05:51 PM Why is the "foul pole" fair???:smash:
