Has anyone hired this man. I've admired his articals and success for awhile and since alot of his waters are local to me I wouldn't mine fishin with the him, preferably at night.

and.... while he is very knowledgeable and all, he doesn't seem to be the type to give up too much info on the first date. He kinda feels you out at first to see what you know and what you need help with. Maybe I tried to cram too much into one day but I got the idea he was afraid he wouldn't get back to the dock, engine was acting up after it had recently been rebuilt by you know who:smash: It was my first time ever hiring a guide and I didn't know what to expect and he didn't really fill me in on what I needed to do to prepare, I guess he assumed I knew. He knows alot about fishing but so do you Tony. Why spend the money?
Anyway, he knows your waters better than he knows the upper bay area where I had my slip.

I saw his lecture in barrington a little while ago. He caught some monsters mostly in rivers, that he showed in his slide show, pretty sweet presentation! Seemed cocky, guess catching a bunch 50lbers will do that though.

Maybe, just maybe, he was running a little shy cause you owned a boat, you had/have a knowledge of fishing and maybe you hired him to find out some of his honey holes and favorite baits.

I know I have a BIG PROBLEM with guys I know asking me to charter out to them. I have even had guys come aboard with a hand held GPS and punching numbers into it while we were fishing!

I have also seen postings on the internet where guys openly talk about hireing a guide to get to know some area so then they can go there in their own boats to fish! Is that a right and proper thing to do????

I think any of us who have put their time in to learn an area become defensive when we know some one is looking for a training session. That having been said, anybody looking for a Charter in June? I have just a few select days left?:D

I wasn't saying he was running a little shy, all you guys that do this proffesionally have to beware of giving out secrets. I understand what went on in the old days at Cuttyhunk with the competition amongst guides and hiding which plugs you used by not leaving them on the rods when returning and stuff like that.
I wasn't looking for honey holes Chet. I like the guy but I don't need to keep hearing justification of his abilities to put people on fish by yakking about so and so who regularlly hires him catching fish after fish and big ones too, I want to see what can ya do for me now, the past is over, time to fish or cut bait ya know what I mean. I learned a few things about catching scup for bait but then we never used them, instead we trolled which was fine.
I'm sure Charlie has forgotten more about fishing than I know. I hear you on the owning a boat thing too Chet, GPS? :eek: Ya I had one of those, but I didn't even have the thing on, I know where I am in Buzzards Bay, it ain't that difficult. He said he wasn't that familiar with my area so we did some traveling that day. I had fun, caught fish. I just seem to be more relaxed surf fishing now, when I ran my boat I got too stressed about stuff and didn't relax enough. If I ever get another real boat it will be about 20' and have a new motor and on a trailer.
One thing that Charlie may be help with is boat handling and operating, he can show someone how to set up drifts and so forth.

I hear ya with his bread n butta. Bloo brought up the point its not so much of the numbers or spots its the whole experience. Like you said Slip, handleing the boat bait presentation ect.

The one time I was out on a charter it was trolling live pog's over a wreck....I had a blast and we caught a few large. I don't know if I could throw m80's and a net the way he did to catch the bait never mind find the wreck. Chet, like the night we went out sow pigs, awsome experiences indeed.

I do not want to be at his mecry. I don't know how true this is but from what I've been told Charlie aboards your boat with his tackle and the liability is on you or in this case me. I feel that if I'm hiring a guide who knows his chit, I'm hoping we can fish at night in ways I wanna know how, not so much knowing his spots. Do you think I'm being unreasonable to think this way?

No,an after talkin With Charlie for a while at the Mass Bass show last yr I would think he could accomadate You. just be upfront on what Ur expectations are so there is nothing left to guesswork.Know I haven't fishied with him.Just my opinion as a fellow human bein.

If a guide is scared you are going to come back to his spots,he should not take out local anglers.
If he take you out and just gives you a boat ride,and does a have hearted job he should get out of the buisness.
I have fished with some great guides and teachers, also some real duds. The latter are no fun, and make for a very unpleasent day on the water.

I'm probably gonna try a shore guide this year. I don't really want to see where so much as to gain some practical info on presentation and lure selection, as well time of day/tide ect. I would expect to be into some fish, cuz I'm already good enough at skunking....:smash:

If you hire someone to guide you, they better not be afraid to show you all the "secret" spots. Why did you hire someone in the first place?

A favorite rock, a deep hole, a rip that forms at a certain stage of the tide, a special lure or technique.

A good paid guide should teach you as much as they can in the time you've hired him for. If they are good, they will have so many "secrets" a day on the water shouldn't really mater to them.

Your not going to get 50 years of experience in one day from a true "pro" guide.

What area did m80 , cast net tossing guide fish. I know a couple guys who used to pull that off.
