this may sound like a stupid question, and i've already had it answered once by a knowlegable fisherman, but i just wanted some other opinions. i've never chummed herring before, this year i'm planning on doing so while throwing plugs. i have a mesh eel bag that i was going to load up with little chunks, tie to my wader belt, and then wade out there on the bar(most of you know where i'm talking about). is this a good idea? basically i wanna know if i should worry about sharks at all. i was told that they aren't many inshore species of shark and that the most i'd have to worry about would be gettting bumped by a big fish(this happened to me last season in the dead of night, freaked me out! but i've been thinking about it more because of the shark sightings last year. i was actually wading out there this past fall when they were seen, helicopters and boats everywhere. talked to a surfer that said he saw about six of em. for my own peace of mind what do y'all think. thanks in advance.

IMHO you're asking for trouble. I don't know where you're talking about, but there are lost of sarks out there and though they might not hurt you they would sure caree the crap outta you.

If your worried about being dinner for a shark, tie the bag to a bouey with mono and float it away from you. Then cast out around it and when you relize it really didn't help to much pull it back in.

A few years back I was chumming off a very long jetty in Rhode Island. It was at night and we were using Herring. Well we got a good suprise when a big blue dog came swimming by. It was cool to watch the shark from ten feet above the water's edge. I don't think I'd wade fish with a chum bag hanging off my side. We've all heard stories of guys being bumped in the night. It's yet to happen to me, but I don't want to encourage it.

im not worried about getting eaten by a shark, just worried about getting freaked the hell out if im wading out there in the dark and somethign grabs onto my bait bag

thanks for your responses. one time i wa fishing in falmouth with some buddies wading in about 3 ft of water and a big shark swam right by me, prob 6-7 ft long. thing didn't even notice us, just kept cruising on by, chasing the schoolies we were catching. guess it wouldn't be worth it to risk the chum-bag, i fish hard but not that hard.

I think the shark would have "checked" you out if you had a chum bag tied to you. They say most sharks let go when they realize you aren't a fish. But with a bag of chum tied to your body.....

I say go 4 it.......sharks gota eat to.

Do it in CC bay where the sharks have a spike stickin out of their tail, makes fishin more interesting if you ask me.
