I returned from BI on Saturday after a week and a half of fishing and relaxing. There were a lot of fish around but most of them were small. One night I was into fish for 3 hours straight with a fish on every other cast and I had to stop because my back was killing me. My biggest fish of the week was 29lbs, 43". After that I caught a few 12 lb fish and rest were smaller. Compared to years past I caught more fish but they were much smaller. The island was much more crowded this year than in year's past and I saw many more people fishing but mostly in the highly accessible areas.

As far as closing the SW point, I saw no reason for that. Yes, there was more erosion but it would not warrant closing any areas. One of the highlights of the week was fishing with a bald eagle about 15' from me. It was truly an awesome sight. I will be back for another week in July.

I wish I could get a sore back this year!
Nice report Steve. One of these days I am going to go to the island and hit it right. Seems the summer time is the right time perhaps.

JohnS,

June is my most productive month on the Block. I can almost guarantee you fish.

It is nice to have sore back from catching fish.

Sounds like a good trip.

Thanks for the access info too!

What did you use to take your fish? Any particular bait/lure seem to be better?

Two of the biggest fish were caught on eels. I caught most of the rest on poppers and redgills. Some mornings and evenings they only took the poppers and others just the redgills. I am a sucker for watching fish hit top water lures that I could not pull myself away from using them. A needlefish with a teaser was effective also.

Steve, a few people I know agree with you June would be the best time of putting some fish on the Rocks there. Maybe next year I can get a trip together with some of my Block Island cronies.
I am with you, it's hard to switch over when you see fish on top! Good report.
