I will be taking a charter with my brother in a couple of weeks. So I pays my money and then there is this "tip" for the Mate. What is the appropriate amount to tip? Is it based on service, how many caught or a flat rate. I am working at being a surfcaster as time allows, but don't want to make any enemies in the fishing world.

Thanks for your help

Tips for Charters... Yes, you should tip based on quality of service and of quality of fishing. The Charter guys can't be held responsible if there are no fish there but they should try to put you on as many fish as conditions allow. Work the normal scale of tipping. If they do a good job and get you into nice fish, a good tip will be really appreciated. I was on a charter at the beginning of the month and while tipping is obviously not required, they certainly appreciate it...

Watch out as some charters will precharge a tip for large groups much as a restaraunt would.

Good Luck

Fishpart, the usual tip depends on the service, customary tip is usually 10%, if its really good I would give 15-20%. Some people tip for both the mate and the captain, that choice in my opinion is up to you. Some times the captain may not be that great but the mate really puts in a hard day, or vice versa. The tip % is based on the trip cost from my understanding, so if the charter costs you say $600 for the day 10% would be $60. Usually if it is a good trip and cost you $600 I would probably tip them $100. Definatley depends on how you feel about it at the end of the trip!!! Hope this helps.
