The Saltwater Edge and the Newport County Fishing Club have joined together to try and help out and clean up some of our fishing spots in Newport. It would be great to see some people turn out for this just for the fact that if we are not proactive and let the homeowners and town members see us trying to make a difference, the access to some of the most fertile fishing grounds in New England could be lost. What we’re looking for are volunteers to help out on Saturday April 17th to clean up some of the trash along the Cliff Walk and Ocean Drive. Most of the areas that need it bad are from the rock pile at Brenton State Park north to Castle Hill Light and along the Cliff Walk from the areas south of Wetmore St. to Ledge Rd. We will meet at the Saltwater Edge in Newport at 10 am and depending on the turn out divide people up into teams and start the clean up. The town officials in Newport will be picking up the garbage bags on Monday so we’ll leave them around the clean up areas for them to pick up. The SWE will supply trash bags and the Newport County Fishing Club will supply locator maps of the area for helping out on clean up locations. You could also map out some of the better fishing spots at the same time. Bring gloves, snacks, drinks, and lots of fishing stories.

With support from local fisherman, we can make not only our fishing spots much cleaner, but make some of the other anglers aware of the problem and make them understand that our access will be lost if we don’t make an effort to make other anglers more aware of this issue. We hope to see everyone there and if you can’t make it onto the island, try and participate in the clean up taking place on the same day by RISAA on the west side of the bay as well as along the West Wall in Pt. Judith and the Matunick Beaches. For more information feel free to contact me at corey@saltwateredge.com or call 508-509-3978.
Thanks for your support!

I'll help, but do I need to get a parking pass to participate or will they waive it so long as we clean but not fish? :laugha: :laugha: :laugha:

I'm in, but I need a ride though. Is anyone here willing to give me a ride from the Providence station?

Thanks for the response guys! I think we'll have enough vehicles to go around and once we meet at the shop we can figure out who can go where. Im sure we can car pool if need be. Im going to try and contact city hall and see if it’s possible to get a one day pass for all the volunteers but no guarantees. If any one has any questions feel free to contact me at corey@saltwateredge.com
Thanks

PS…. Notaro I think that’s going to be tough but If there is someone in that area that could grab you on the way by the more people we get out there the better.

Okay, I'll try to make it if work schedule permits.

Notaro - maybe that would be a good day to do some casting if you can make it down.

The more the better. Im thinking if we have more than we can handle we may even try and do along Brenton State Park down towards the Kings Beach Fishing Area. This type of stuff is great for fisherman due to the fact that the local papers and selectman notice this. We are not all slobs! Awareness is key. I would like to see my son be able to fish some of the same spot my dad took me to growing up and I fish today with friends and fellow fisherman. Its not a bad thing thats for sure. If peeps can make that day great. If not maybe the next clean up. All the help is welcome thats for sure.
