if I was to make a pikie and throw a surfster lip on it (which I have just done) do you guys think I'll need to add a shot under the chin?? those lips are pretty heavy and i know that the surfser plug isnt weighted...

any thoughts on what will happen??

Eben, Creek Chub made hybrids (pikie body, surfster lip). Not sure if they were weighted though. I think it would work fine without the weight.

Eben, try it with no weight first. If it needs weight you can always drill it later and epoxy a slug in and cover epoxy with red glitter while epoxy is wet.

I'm waiting for hooks to come so I havent swam it yet... I bet they roll a little bit, but roll is nice:D

It works great ..although this one is weighted .. I'd like to try without also .. On weighting Creek Chub had lead up front with thru wire going through it ,,,if you have to weight do it the way you were going to, on bottom under chin .. Keeps weight low and less roll ..

Thats how they weighted the pikie. No weight in the surfster except the "surf" surfster. Does anyone know how they weighted the hybrids, I am guessing no weight. Nice plug Tagger.:btu:

with no weight. Previously swam with weight and both seemed to swim exactly like my Pikies. Nose down and tail a waggin. The unweighted rolled a LOT. Not bothered by this though. The only real difference was the chin weighted versions dug a little harder but still had the tail out of the water and were slightly harder to keep straight on the cast. Mine were red cedar and I think If I went with heavier wood I would get the desired subsurface slither rather than the retarded Pogy wiggly wobble.

When you guys say a plug rolls, what do you mean? I undertand wiggle, but not roll.

Roll would be rotation on a longitudinal axis ( as if the plug were tipping from it's right side to its left side and so on). As opposed to wiggle which would be along a vertical axis.

I gotcha. So roll is not necessarily good because most baitfish wiggle more more than they roll.

I say yes and no. If you've ever seen a bunker who's bit "hit" a few times they sorta do the same thing. What I "think" I like is that at least a fish looking up at it will see an eye from time to time.
I'm considering weighting the front side of the belly down low as well as a little chin to calm it down a notch as far as roll goes.
One thing I gotta say is that the surface wake is a killer!

Roll = Flash ..Mike Fixter told me that .. can't argue there...rollout is bad ..:(

flash? I don't know what it is but sounds bad? :eek5:

When a bait fish isn't swimming in its natural state like when it rolls up on its side from injury it flashes something fierce.not good if Ur that baitfish.

Thanks for the replies. I have turned a few swimmers, and am still learning the craft. You guys have been very helpful over the years.
