View Full Version : STAN GIBBS article in LAST WEEKS FISHERMAN JHABS 04-07-2004, 03:04 PM Did any of you see it , It is one GREAT read about the Real Pioneer and LEGEND Stan Gibbs, Charlie Soares did a super job writing it. I am going to frame mine and hang it in the shop.......... TheRattBoy 04-07-2004, 03:28 PM John, I really liked the old photo's , like the airbrush one, it's cool getting that rare look behind the sences, like to see more photos and stories like that. :) johnny "the Ratt Boy" Ed B 04-07-2004, 03:31 PM Yes I saw it too, good article and definately worth saving. I'd like to see Flaptail do an article too some time in the future since he actually met and knew the man. ;) :D Subtle hint for Flap. Gloucester2 04-07-2004, 03:55 PM Never realized he was an accomplished distance caster . . . learn something new everyday striprman 04-07-2004, 03:59 PM Does anyone have any of his fish carvings? BigFish 04-07-2004, 04:35 PM JHabs....I also enjoyed the article, well done by Charlie Soares. I tucked a couple away. Truely a pioneer in his field and we all owe him quite a debt of gratitude for the great work that he did. We will all benefit from it for years to come.:D MartinD18 04-07-2004, 04:38 PM Flap DID a story on S. Gibbs in OTW about 4 years ago. BigFish 04-07-2004, 04:39 PM Do you happen to know what issue? Month and year? I sure would like to read that!:) By the way MartinD18....welcome to the site and thanks for the info!;) Slipknot 04-07-2004, 05:25 PM Is the issue of the fisherman still available? BigFish 04-07-2004, 05:37 PM You might be able to find it Slip, the new issue just came out today.:) Bernzy 04-07-2004, 05:40 PM Great article!!!! Two thumbs up. Bernzy B-assman 04-07-2004, 06:17 PM I'd love to read that article - but my subscription is MIA I signed up at the RISAA show on March 6th - paid CASH for a year and still no sign of it!! Anybody else who signed up at the show get theirs yet? I guess I'll have to give them a call..... I know that I dont have the receipt....... :( slugo 04-07-2004, 10:00 PM Good read. The picture of him in yankee stadium is a classic. Crafty Angler 04-07-2004, 10:34 PM It really was a great article on Stan Gibbs - I got a call from Charlie Soares this afternoon and complimented him on it, told him how much I enjoyed it. A very well written piece on a true pioneer. Hey, Slip, if you can't find it PM me tonite - I think there's still a couple at the store just a coupla blocks down the street from me and I can grab one in the early AM for ya. Mr. Sandman 04-08-2004, 06:10 AM That was a great Bio. Charlie Soares has done a wonderful job this cold winter...Those articles on trophy bass and past history of the bass clubs were great and this one on Stan Gibbs shows real class and was a pleasure to read in "The Fishermen". Gibbs was not a guy who ate quiche in a waterfront office, IMO, he blazed his own trail, one plug at a time. I am glad someone paid proper homage to the man; a great local surfcaster who had a wonderful talent. Bliz 04-08-2004, 06:29 AM If you think of it, could you grab a couple of them Chuck, and I'll pick one up from you next Thursday at the meeting?... MartinD18 04-08-2004, 06:33 AM BigFish and Ed B - that Flap story on Gibbs was in Aug. '96 OTW. Ed B 04-08-2004, 08:08 AM Thanks MartinD for finding it. That sounds like one of first few issues of OTW when they started their magazine. The magazine was young but Flap was already starting to get old. :) :D Hey Flap Flaptail 04-08-2004, 08:12 AM Old? I'm freakin' ancient!:D Flaptail 04-08-2004, 08:15 AM And you know what got me there? Crossin' the Chatham bars at two in the morning with you in my 14' skiff in pitch dark with nuthin' but your pen light around your neck! Crafty Angler 04-08-2004, 08:56 AM Will do guys, hope they're still there - I have to call Zach Harvey at the Fisherman anyway about something else, so at the very least I'll see if I can get a bunch of copies to bring to the next NCSWFC meeting. I'll let you all know as soon as I get 'em - Bliz 04-08-2004, 09:04 AM You're a good man Charlie Brown!... Ed B 04-08-2004, 09:11 AM Flap I usually checked to make sure the batteries were good. Besides celestial navigation is easier when it's nice and black out without interference of background light. I will admit to a few close calls with the commercial boats steaming along in the channel on those foggy nights and mornings though. Crafty Angler 04-08-2004, 09:34 AM Slip and Bliz - I just went down and grabbed the last 2 copies for ya. :) This was your lucky day - the new issue was out but the news guy hadn't yet picked up the returns so I got them from behind the counter. Bliz, I'll see ya at the meeting, Slip PM me on how ya want me to get it to ya. Bliz 04-08-2004, 09:50 AM :claps: Thanks! Thanks alot :btu: Ed B 04-09-2004, 10:08 AM Buried under the big pile of "important stuff" I managed to find the 96 Aug OTW which featured Flaptail's article of Stan Gibbs and Gibb's lures. I had put on one of those yellow sticky papers to mark this article back in 96 as a must save. Steve talks alot about his meetings with the man from the time when Steve was a youngin up to recent years. He discusses the development of a variety of Gibb's lures like the darter, polaris, pencil popper, canal special etc, and why Stan developed them to do what they do under certain conditions. It's a good read if you still got it. Thanks Martin for remembering this one. It's a nice compliment to Charley's article in the Fisherman last week Slipknot 04-14-2004, 01:19 PM You were correct John, Excellant article by Charlie :btu: thanks again Crafty :) RI Popper 04-14-2004, 01:35 PM That was a wonderful article John. It was like a wood history lesson. Got to give him credit. Armand Crafty Angler 04-14-2004, 02:16 PM No problem-o, Slip - eelskin 04-15-2004, 12:19 PM I had the distinct pleasure of fishing the Canal several times with Stan in the early 80's (before his hip replacement). At that time he was fishing bluefish for his lobster traps and couldn't have been more down to earth. His shop was on his property in Scusset and one could go there and buy seconds cheaply. If you were known, a canal special pencil popper could be obtained, they were never sold retail. I'll never forget Stan or the shop he ran. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
