View Full Version : Poll: High Gas Prices Going To Put A Dent In Your Fishing?
fishweewee 04-07-2004, 07:08 PM Gas is approaching $2.00/gallon (regular!).
It's likely to go up as the driving season progresses - is this going to change your fishing? (BOAT OR SHORE)
fishweewee 04-07-2004, 07:14 PM BTW,
There are two things that I've found helpful in saving $$$ on gas.
1) Shop around. If you find a station that's reasonable, pass the word.
My 2 favorites in the Buzzard's Bay and Cape areas are Hess in Faunce Corner and the place right across the street from M&D's. Usually, they are the cheapest in the area.
Sorry I don't know any places in RI.
2) Get a card that provides rebates on gasoline purchases. The best one I've seen thus far is AAA's Visa program, issued through MBNA. They don't check to see that you're a member - you get an immediate discount at the pump when you buy a certain number of gallons.

missing link 04-07-2004, 07:15 PM I'm happy we filled the boat up b4 we put her to sleep
2.00 gal thats CRAZY!!! thank god i got a job or it looks like i would be taking the bus to school :D :D
BigFish 04-07-2004, 07:24 PM Nope, not gonna bother me.....I drive 2 hours to the backside and 2 hours back at least once a week, sometimes two. I am fishing dammit, ain't nothin' gonna get me down!:D
GBOUTDOORS 04-07-2004, 07:27 PM no I will still fish as much as I can and the fact that I filled the boat with 105 gal last fall at 1.50 will help out.:D
RickBomba 04-07-2004, 07:57 PM Lucky Man, Greg...
Lucky Man,
Boats gonna put the hurtin on Suburbular King, he already gets bad enough mileage as it is.
Gonna porbably try to look for a yard to keep the boat on the trailer this summer close to the water.
I hate to say this, but if Bush was the man, he could definately put a stop to this.
Gas to him is no big deal, but to the rest of the country, it's our life blood.
Fightin wars for ego is just boosting my electric, oil, natural, and regular gas rates...alll of a sudden a controllable cost of doing business has gone thru the roof.
I'm all for supporting our troops everywhere, but I now must ask myself the question, should we resort back to the old isolationist ways of the past.
Now guys, don't get me wrong, if Uncle Sam asked me to pick up a gun and go to war, I'd be the platoon leader on the boat...but I'm starting to question whether this is a grudge match or something that will serve a purpose for the greater good of the world.
Sorry to rant,
I've got plenty of friends overseas right now that need ALL of our support (they certainly have mine), so don't think I'm somme Pinko Bstersd.
I just wish I came from a privaledged family, and didn't have to worry about how much my gas costs.
Kind of burns me up.
Sorry to rant,
Rick
Swede 04-07-2004, 08:07 PM PFFFFTT Thought you were talkin about a boat. I burn 80 gal a week, only fill up at the dock, and it will not stop me from fishing the EEZ for bass :D
RockLobsta 04-07-2004, 08:22 PM Check out this site.....tells you who has the lowest prices around......won't do much if your boats in a slip but for the trailer guys and gals.....
Gas Buddy Dot Com (http://gasbuddy.com/)
Squid kids Dad 04-07-2004, 08:30 PM Nope not gonna bother me...lol..I have a company car,,They pay for the gas,,And I can fit my 10 footer in side..Not a boater but I feel you the boaters
Vectorfisher 04-07-2004, 08:37 PM I am sure I won't be just riding around aimlessly with the gas prices reaching $ 2.00 a gallon but I dont think it will stop me from going out when and where I want
thefishingfreak 04-07-2004, 08:39 PM my boat holds 306 gallons.and gets 2 gallons a mile.
if it's the heat of the season, aug/ sept, i'll need to refill once a week.
yeah, the gas price is going to hurt. but this is what i've been saving all winter for.
anyone know when this $ hike is going to happen on the water?
Backbeach Jake 04-07-2004, 08:46 PM This just puts me back where I started , fishing for groceries. Those were good times and I was broke (r) and dumb (er):D
Won't really affect me. The big luxury car I just bought actually gets 5-6mpg better than the POS I just pulled off the road :D
macojoe 04-07-2004, 10:00 PM This why I still have a commercial lic!! I will sell some keep some this is the only way i can suport my habbit!!
Boat gets 2.5 MPG,
Truck towing gets about 12 MPG!
its about 35 miles a day for the truck, and not sure for the boat, but I use about 16 to 18 gal a day for the Vinyard trips.
24 gal X 2.00 = $48.00 per trip.
200# fluke X $1.50 = $300.
$48 for gas + $10 Oil + $10 a day gear loss + $15 for food + $10 mis. =$93 which leaves a $207 profit
Thats if I get 200# Fluke?? And that is not every day!! Now take that money and pay for the new motor and conversion to the boat, fixing things around the boat and all the other stuff like tackle reels rods you get the Idea I am still in the hole!!
But I love it!!
:D
Got Stripers 04-07-2004, 10:00 PM Can you say 4-stroke, lightweight aluminum, trailer to and fish close and the new job will help.
thefishingfreak 04-07-2004, 10:19 PM :)
beachwalker 04-07-2004, 11:23 PM good one
ok so I pay $2.20 right now for fuel (welcome to Nantucket)
I drive a P/U with a 30 gal tank. I go through 1.5-2 taks a week during fishing season. raise the price of fuel .25 or .50 c and that equates to $15-30 more per week in fuel costs. over the course of a normal fishing season that is $450 -900.
and we are crying about a beach pass going up $50 ?
it's all good. maybe I will start keeping 4-5 fish a week and stocking for the winter. keep my food cost down and rationalize the effort.
real happy i am not running boat........
good one weewee (give some lessons to striprman) :D
Big part of the problem - the energy concerns had a hand in drafting energy policy.
There's your real cost of fishing: the per trip costs. Eels & gas are where most of the money for the hobby goes....
I bought a Honda Element last year, it gets a little over twenty no good for sand though...but I don't fish sand. Most of my spots are under 3 gallons, round trip. I don't care for boat too much - I'd rather stay home and watch TV than fish off a boat.
If I did not guide I would have gotten an gas/electric Prius and put a big rod rack on it.
Saltheart 04-08-2004, 09:08 AM Don't like it but it won't stop the fishing.
Tattoo 04-08-2004, 09:52 AM I'm glad I live on an Island! :D
Here's the word on the street about gas prices.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4687028/
Looks like might have to stop huffin gas and switch to paint.
Keep painting those plugs and you'll end up dain bramaged:D
its gonna put a dent in my pocket cause i live about an hr from both the cape and rhody SS. last year i probably made around 150 trips, most of the time by myself. but this year i gotta fishin partna so hopefully that will cut back my spending.
Krispy 04-08-2004, 10:45 AM I'm 1-1/2 hrs from my favorite Rhody shore spots, I dont think I will make any less trips because of gas prices. Though I may think twice about going on off tides or wind.
There is always fishing in CT, and an inshore boat to use. I dont think gas will be an issue there, since the fishing is so close to port

This is sort of along the lines of what I was thinking too...
RI Popper 04-08-2004, 10:56 AM Hi Joe, how are you buddy, Well I get about 2.5 miles per gallon on the water and about 13 or 14 pulling it. So it costs for sure. It's gonna take a lot of poppers to support the habit this summer. :( ;)

what, my inshore boat to use? ;) :p
fishweewee 04-08-2004, 10:58 AM No. Fishing in CT. *sigh*
Krispy 04-08-2004, 10:59 AM should read: No fishing in CT
fishweewee 04-08-2004, 11:12 AM Freudian slip. :D
rwilhelm 04-08-2004, 11:23 AM Damn OPEC cut production when they should be increasing it. It won't really effect me much most of the places I fish are within 30 to 40 minute drive.
ragfly 04-08-2004, 11:26 AM What it means to me is to stay over night and get two days of fishing that way I feel like I got my moneys worth. Well, that's what I will tell my wife. :D
My truck gets under 5 mpg in 4x4 on the beach, My old boat averaged 5.5 mpg, the new one will more than likely be similar. So whether I am fishing the beach or drifting in the boat it cost me about the same to get there.
chris L 04-08-2004, 01:45 PM looks like its getting to be the time to drive from station to station looking for the knucklehead that forgot to turn off the pumps . then its 0.00 per gallon !
I dont care about the cost . Im still driving to fish where ever I feel there are fish !
besides its only money and Im independently wealthy . Im just sure what the wealth is ?
