Where does everyone hook there herring when live lining them? How long do you get out of the fish before he needs to be replaced with a fresh one?

hook:into upper jaw palat and strait out thru top of head, not to far back, might hit the brain.

hook in a hollow area of the nose. and I leave it out till I get a hit while drifting & check for weeds

I prefer life bait hooked behind the dorsal. Easy on the cast.....glass is good.

Definitely a nice parabolic glass rod for lobbing livelies. Cant wait. I also prefer behind the Dorsal. They seem to struggle a lot better that way. One thing i noticed is the Ox system makes them too lively, and bigger bass wont touch em for some reason.

dorsal hook placement: good for casting."swim away"
for boat drifting, hook 'em somewhear in the head, so they won't spin.

Ah, the "Oxy-Dave wars" on WMI. Too bad all of the pissing matches were deleted from their database--it was high comedy. Chumming with oxygen, supercharging those livies, too much :hihi:

I go in thru the eye socket and out the skull. Be careful of the brain. I have found that they stay on the hook better this way, haven't had any luck with them staying on the hook when hooking thru flesh. If there are bass around you won't be changing baits.

If you want to follow Goose's method, you might think of cutting the dorsal, too.

Gives'em that Wounded baitfish look. They can't swim straight they just kind of Struggle

When I first started fishing with herring, I'd hook them with the hook going in one nostrel and out the other, caught alot of fish hooking them like that, but also lost alot (especially really big ones) because the hook would "turn" and get embedded in the herrings head causing missed strikes. Now I hook them in the mouth, up through the hard palat of the roof of the mouth and out one nostrel or out of the corner of the eye.
I found that hooking them through one nostrel and out the other allows them to live longer, so if they get tired, you can unhook them, put them bach into the well, and sometimes they revive.
Up through the roof of the mouth and out the nostrel or eye, gives a better ratio of hookups, but the herring also dies quicker.

I always save the dead ones for chumming/chunking. Gives me twice as much fishing time. I usually move to a different spot when I chum/chunk.
