GxGxL div 800 = weight I had one 39" fork 22' girth and I weighed it with a scale at 25 lbs. the formula using the fork length got 23.6 lbs. so maybe the formula is better suited for overall length. JohnR 07-05-2001, 10:47 AM Ouch - sorry Smokey but Slip's correct, it's Girth x Girth x Length / 800 =Weight... Still nice stinkin' fish!!! Patrick 07-05-2001, 10:58 AM It's not exact but it's close enough to get a general idea of the weight. IGFA uses the formula to see if the picture of the fish matches the weight. Using an object the same distance from the camera, they determine the scale and go from there. Got Stripers 07-05-2001, 12:16 PM I've said this before and I think it merits repeating, if you want weight carry a scale! Unless you've got some willing friends standing next to you, your not getting length and girth from a large striper without doing it some damage by laying it down on the sand, rocks or even boat deck. My 50# digital Berkely, I can take out of my pocket, turn on and set up to weigh a fish with one hand, leaving the other hand free to control and protect the resource. You lay a fish down on the sand (or any surface) while you get your tape out, measure length and then girth, that fish is loosing the protective slime coating and will be more apt to suffer from delayed mortality. Do the fish a favor, buy a scale. Smokey 07-05-2001, 12:44 PM chris L (07-05-2001 11:47): oops slipknot saw it , its GXGXL/800 not LXLXG/800 . good eyes Bruce that makes alot more sence. we thought they were more like 30lbs. Carl 07-06-2001, 11:37 AM I was just wondering what is better the berkely scale or a boga grip? Thanks Carl JohnR 07-06-2001, 11:47 AM Carl? Same Carl from last year, drive a Probe? Long time - how you doing?? $ for $, the 50 # Berkely. Something like $30 -v- $100 for the 30# boga... Can you even find the 50# anymore? Carl 07-06-2001, 11:58 AM John, Good memory on driving the probe. Yeah that's me. I've been busy at home and traveling too much for work. I lurk around here but haven't posted much. I'm trying to change that. Carl JohnR 07-06-2001, 12:34 PM Well, welcome back Chris... If you can make it tomorrow night, it's only a short drive from your home... Carl 07-06-2001, 12:44 PM John, Like I said, good memory on the car, the name should be even easier. Right. ;-) Carl chris L 07-06-2001, 01:02 PM did I go somewhere ? hehehehe I know a brain fart . slow down , dont try and do it all yourself . My name is carl now then right ? I know im only busting em ! JohnR 07-06-2001, 04:08 PM I did the same thing last year... I kept calling Carl Chris... Welcome back CARL :P Carl 07-06-2001, 04:33 PM No problem on the name thing. Like I said last year, I've been called worse. Thanks for the invite. I may not make it in time for the food, but what time are you going to divide and conquer? Carl chris L 07-06-2001, 04:39 PM as long as you dont call me a bad dad or a nonfisherman or late for dinner ! hehehehehe I have my priorities . oh yeah john liam is crawling ....at a boy !!!! now you need to activate those eyes in the back and side of your head . isnt it great it only gets better . JohnR 07-06-2001, 04:47 PM Yeh, I can no longer lay things down on the floor in front of him without fear of those things being eaten. The camera was in his mouth before it had taken it's first shot... Carl, I imagine we'll leave Weekapaug around 7:30 maybe 8.. Time and tide... But take my cell# 617-512-2541 if you're running late. DamonM 07-07-2001, 01:58 PM Get the boga grip if you want to use it as a tool for handling fish, but if you just want a scale, then the berkely is the way to go. Its fun bottoming out a 30lb boga grip, but unless you have two of them, you have to do some calculating to get your weights. Got Stripers has a point about overhandling fish, but I have to say that any striper I take thats worth measuring girth is going to be laying on the sand or rocks anyway as I unhook it. Saltheart 07-08-2001, 05:40 PM Just to get the numbers straight since I measured Smokey's fish. The first fish was 41.5 inches fork length by 24.5 inch girth. The second fish was longer at 42 3/8 inches but had a girth of only 22.5 inches. That calculates out to 31.1 lbs and 26.8 lbs. Since I measured fork length for both . the calculations will be low. When landed . I estimated one at 30 lbs and the other at 35 lbs. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
