I got into big fish today, like I used to see back in the late 80's, when the big bunker were around. I've hit them good a couple times like this, but it's been years and boy did it feel good. That fish weighed in at 27 lbs and some change and was one of 6 fish over 25 lbs I caught while I watched them fight over the dead mackeral I feed them directly below the boat. Talk about freeky, but fun, 15 foot of water on top of a hump/ledge, with 25 foot around. It was like feeding starving sharks in an aquarium, these fish were practically duking it out with each other to nail the dead ticker macks I was throwing them. I'd let it sink a bit, give it a couple twitches and bang, every time was a hit/run and I missed a lot of first takes. It didn't matter because it that fish dropped it, it was wacked again almost immediately, every mackeral I fished was a hookup.

I'm guessing 25, 27, two at maybe 35 and two bigger ones probably pushing high 30's maybe 40, with maybe 6 that were 12-15 lbers. All this in about 45-60 minutes of just red hot action, until I ran of of dead mackeral, plus the Indians were circling my wagon. I just was amazed at how in considerate and rude people can be, in an attempt to not just join in; but almost push me right off my spot. Because this was A SPOT, these fish were on a hump that was maybe 20 feet across and you had to be right on it. I had the last laugh though, because not one of the 6 boats within casting range of me had mackeral, so there was a lot of talking going on :). A guy and daughter nailed some on tube/worm, but not the big ones I was on.

Broke the largest one off, which ironically came on my plastic after I had run out. After than it just got nutty and I ran back to Boston to try for some more macks. I ran out of gas about the time the wind came up and I headed in. I haven't even looked to see if anyone posted about the RI leg, hope you guys had a good one. I'm kind of pleased I decided not to go :).

Good going GS. At least some people were catching fish. I failed miserably at my attempt. Eels are over-rated.

Awesome job, GS, sorry to hear about the vultures. You definitely made the right call (we didn't do quite as good) and it sounds like your Bob-day worked out great.

Space management...Another one of those multi-faceted arguments... obviously, no one owns the water or the beach, but where is the line drawn.

We've all probably been catching fish when the guy down the beach (who ain't) comes over and casts over your line... that's ignorant, right? But what if I'm standing in a big rip, should I be able to monopolize the rip, if that's where the fish are?

Boats are alot more complicated... like GS's hump, that's a huge gray area. Should they be able to cast to it?

I try to give folks there space. I personally think the one who's first on the spot should be left alone. Or if you can fish the area without being too invasive or interfering with his/her methods, no problem.

If you're managing a drift over a larger area, everyone is entitled to take a turn. What about a major rip? I kinda view that as public property vs. an isolated rock or hump that can only support one or so boat.

I think that the best rules to follow would be those of common courtesy. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

However, at the risk of offending everyone, if you've notice how many of your fellow Mass residents drive, how could you expect anything different out on the water? I would suggest that the same guy who blows a redlight or ignores a yield sign and cuts off 3 cars, would likely pull his boat right next to you and start throwing 4 oz. rangers... just an impartial observation.

Boy, you guys always get my positive side on Mondays.

That last statement relating it to Mass driving says a lot. The yahoos are out on the roads in great numbers, so I guess it's got to trickle down to the beach, boat ramp or jetty. What ever happened to treat others.....

GS, I was out sunday with the guy I usually charter with. Whenever we get somewhere and hook into a fish , we keep the rod down and the line tight, sometimes it works. I swear that the guys who don't know what they are doing hang out and scan with binoculars, and as soon as they see you have a fish, they swoop in. We were at one hump, chunking , and livelining macs. After we caught our third fish, we looked up to four other boats. We watched these people, and while we were catching left and right, they were getting squat. Some guys were way off the hump, which was small in the first place, and others were down current of it. One guy was with a girl in a small boat, he boated slowly over our lines, and stopped on top of them. At that point his companion picked up her rod and was getting ready to fish, we yelled over to them. So he motors over and says , "oh I did'nt realize your lines were out there". Then he says , "we were'nt gonna fish there". Well the guy I was with had it at this point. We packed it in and moved to another location. One guy actually backed his boat up about 100yds when he saw we were leaving, you would of thought he was in a mall parking lot, just to get our space. It was really quite comical. About 15 minutes after we got to the next rip, some of the other boats from the last place showed up. All in all we had a good productive day fish wise. Now all I need is to get my own boat.

I have had my share of run-ins with the so called "vultures" and I usually just get so p@&*ed off I just leave! I remember one day I was fishing from shore on a deserted beach and a boat came out of nowhere and plopped themselves right in my casting range.......I was tempted....but I decided they werent worth loosing a $14 lure over!!!

but then again folks it doesnt just happen on the water does it???? seems no matter what you are doing or where you are going....you are bound to run into rude people......

As for me the vultures have been leaving me alone as of late. The spot I've been going is right against some hairy looking rocks; if you know the bottom contour you're all set, but it looks like a foreboding spot if you're new to the territory.
My biggest problem is the hordes of sea kayakers that seem to like this spot as well. There must be some sort of "rent our kayak and we'' give you a tour" type of place nearby, and boy, what knotheads!
I am a very patient fellow...enough said. If and when I see somebody in one of these rentals coming even close to the spot where my line is I give a cordial warning, like "Hey, my fishing line is over there." None of them ever listen. I've had line wrapped around heads, skeggs, and almost had fish jump into these boats!
They just keep coming...
Anyhow, now I've vented.
Specialist, if you read this...You went all the way from quincy to Nahant? Did you guys get anything heavy? Nahant used to be my favorite spot from shore until I bought the "Cookie O' Puss."
