Does anyone know how many herring should be kept in a holding pen at one time? I have a 30"x30" round tank at dock side, but am unsure how many herring can be kept alive in there without overcrowding. Please share your thought with me.

I'm not sure about the exact stocking density but I do know that overcrowding can kill the whole load; I'd err on the side of caution. In a 30x30 I'd guess that three dozen would be about max. But there may well be guys on this board who are more in the know than I am. If you have good water movement at the dock then you may be able to put more in???????

Guys,

Thanks for the info. Last night I got 24 and put them in holding pen. All but three survived. I added another 12 to the tank tonight and will see how that goes before adding more. Again, thanks.

I do about 1 fish per gallon of water in my tank and seems to work ok if the water flows good and I keep the water cold!! that is key keeping them cool at least for me.

are you guys talking about sunken herring pens?
or fishtanks on the dock?
or transporting tanks?
they shouldn't be that many dying on you.

30"x30" seems small.

How long can you expect them to last in a dockside holding pen?
