Anybody going to try and fish the bank this weekend for cod? Any weather reports yet? Just out of curiosity at what point would the weather forecast stop you from going out in a 24-er? 3'-5' 4'-6' What wind direction is better SW, NE, NW, etc?

I like the wind with me when I'm heading back home. The types of seas you mention are more than I would look for when planning a trip out that way. 2-3 foot seas is about where I consider it since it can easily double. Less is even better.

I should be out there, though the weather looks iffy at this point!!!! but if the wind settles down :btu:

Here is an interesting tidbit I picked up in my boating safety and seamanship class that I took before buying. When the forecast says waves 2-4 ft, this means that 70% of all the waves you encounter will be between 2 and 4 ft tall.

What about the remaining 30% you ask? That means 15% will be smaller and 15% will be taller. In other words - one out of every six waves will be 5' or more tall.

"2-4' seas" can actually be pretty rough depending on the size of your boat.

I don't buy 15 - 20kts winds keeping the seas at 2 - 4 ft. Maybe but whent he winds hit 15kts from the SW, its a wind in your face bouncy ride back across mass/cape cod bay.

I hear ya, not sure what to believe with these forecasts have been out when it's great and foecast called for rough sea's also seen it vice versa. In any event Stellwagen looks like a wash SCA possible=NO THANKS!

Forecasting can be a real joke at times.. Two stories come to mind.

One fishing BI from the beach and we were at sandy point...I swear the wind was blowing 40+...it was a friggen sandstorm out there. We are huddled in the truck looking into the darkness and I turn on the radio, the coastal weather..."wind NE tonight 10-15"...My buddy says 10-15..that is nothing, opens the door and it rips it out of his hands and nearly snapped it off! SOunded like a rocket blast. We were shot-peened with sand all night.

The other is offshore..."1-3' seas" on the radio..these are more like 4-8 with the a cresting soaker now and then. We take green water over the bow and it washes my buddy's tackle box down the full length of the boat and slams into the stern busting it open....No problem I say...only 1-3 today. It is days like that it feels good to be back in the harbor looking out.

You gotta love these guys who make forcasts from inner city office buildings. I would rather hear reoprts from guys out there anyday.

Last year, we took our boat 24 miles out several times chasing down cod... and a few times we made it out to the Isle of Shoals and turned back. The lesson we learned is that the forecast is a guide, some days the weather is better, some days it is worse. Every now and then, it is right on. But in the end, you have to feel comfortable with where you are going and what you are in, and turning back is always an option,... the fish will be there on the bank tomorrow and it would be nice to be around to chase them down.

My favorite days are when they forecast a "sprinkle" or "light rain" and "fog", reason being, not much wind. The fishing is always excellent and less boat traffic. Bait fishing is always much better,.... B
