View Full Version : help w/ lure IDs
maddog2020 04-28-2004, 09:40 PM Can you folks help me identify the makers of the plugs below?
Some of them didn't have hooks on them so I put on some vmc's.
All are wooden.
TIA!
BigBo 04-28-2004, 09:58 PM Nothing decent there Ray. I'll give you my address so you can send them to me to dispose of that crap.;) :D :btu:
BasicPatrick 04-28-2004, 11:54 PM Grey or Olive grety small needle on the bottom of the right hand side looks to be a Gag's needle for sure.
I got the same one in a package.
:D
Crafty Angler 04-29-2004, 05:46 AM The yellow one with glitter on the top left is a vintage early Habs needle - I have the same size in black (which has been retired) and a 1 1/2 oz in yellow w/ yellow bucktail - also retired.
Got nothing better than guesses on the others - that other one does indeed look like a Gag's -
Hey, I'll trade ya a Jet mortising attachment for that yellow Habs :laughs: - just kidding, thanks again -
If DZ chimes in here, he'll give ya the ID on all the needlefish - he's an acknowledged master on the subject now writing a book about BI, which is Needlefish Country for sure.
crashfromamesbury 04-29-2004, 06:52 AM ray, that black one is a lex.. (didn't you get that from me?)
BigBo 04-29-2004, 07:43 AM The black swimmer below the yellow Gibbs Needlefish looks like a Luhr-Jensen Swim Oreno.
Surely Bassey 04-29-2004, 07:58 AM Can I buy a vowel?
maddog2020 04-29-2004, 10:06 AM The hot pink popper is a Hab's (I think that is what the guy told me....lol).
Smaller black needle w/ gold scaled sides (hard to tell from pic) is a Gab's - thanks BPatrick & Crafty.
Big yellow needle is a Hab's - cool, it looked like he could have made it - thanks, Crafty.
Naw, Pete/crash - u gave me a small tealish colored lipless Lex swimmer that time you picked up that rod.
Black swimmer/looks like a darter could be a luhr-jensen? ok, Bo.
Surely Bassey - "no more plugs for you! " in a soup nazi kind of voice.....lol. Catch some fish tomorrow dude....wish I could go.
Where are the pikie guru's?
who is DZ, Crafty (dunno most of these guys real names anyway).
So I should fish some of these then? ;) I want to swim them at the local reservior and see how they wiggle. :)
thanks for the help so far, dudes. :)

Diamond Tackle 04-29-2004, 06:05 PM I was gonna say same thing Cape, Lex never had that exact bend in the lip on the Surfster or lex 2 nor that yellow and back eye.
JHABS 04-29-2004, 07:59 PM Yellow Needle , Pink Popper and Jointed Plug I made about 9 -10 years ago when I just started....................
maddog2020 04-29-2004, 08:10 PM capesams - thats scary u have one new in the package. How come they call ya grumpy? My wife calls me "grumpy" all the time.
WOW - thanks for the verification, Habs. :D Never knew you make pikies.
Who made the natural colored pencils and the chartreuse thing that can be rigged on either end?
Thanks again for the help, folks. :)
spence 04-29-2004, 08:20 PM Are the Luhr-Jensen Swim Orenos any good? I have one that swims wonderfully but the wood cracked up the second time I used it...

BigBo 04-29-2004, 09:49 PM L-J.............IMO are cheap imitations. Some swim okay, some don't. Most have to be tuned so they don't roll. They didn't appear to be sealed before painting either.
Crafty Angler 04-29-2004, 10:05 PM Ray - meant to post this earlier but was forced to face the indignity of working for a living - it's really starting to interfere with my fishing, I'll tell ya -
Anyway, DZ is the President of the Newport County Saltwater Fishing Club and a local Newporter - Dennis is a good friend and a damned nice guy, has been a 'mentor' to me (even though he's younger than I am) - probably one of the most knowledgable guys in the surf on plugs, eels, etc. with a number of released fifty-somethings to his credit. Also my favorite Dutch uncle when I need one -
D. has written a number of excellent articles for The Fisherman and is currently working on the publication of his book 'The Snowstorm Blitz' about the occurance at Block Island in November of '81 when a school of 40 to 60 pound bass hit the south side of the Island. Last I heard he was talking to Burford. It's an epic story - I got to read the original draft a while back and this past year he did a great Powerpoint presentation for our club (that was heavily attended) on that blitz from the first person point of view - it was a hell of a show for those who were there - hope he takes it on the road next fall after the bass high-tail it outta here. If he does, make a point of seeing it. You won't be disappointed.
He's been fishing BI for years with 'Uncle' Zeke and the rest of the Usual Suspects - trust me, Ray, the guy knows needlefish. ;)
maddog2020 04-29-2004, 11:07 PM That is some cool info there, Crafty.
BTW - clear out ya private messages - ya box is full again....lol. Give me a call tomorrow nite if you are well enough to go to the Boxboro show.
Crafty Angler 04-30-2004, 02:55 PM Roger that :p
