View Full Version : HELP !!! Bob Hahn Research Thread ..
Tagger 05-01-2004, 08:59 AM I'd like to know more about Bob Hahn .. I've borrowed this plug to knockoff .. Its an Original Bob Hahn . If it didn't have a name I'd call this one warrior .. I've been told this was his best producer .. I love this plug and will return it after attempting to get a perfect copy ..
Tagger 05-01-2004, 09:02 AM This plug weighs one 1.3 ounces and is 5 1/8 inches...
Tagger 05-01-2004, 09:07 AM The lip appears to be a #4 colorado blade ..I'm guessing he wasn't a big fan of blue fish .. There is no tail hook.. not broke ,it was made that way .. just a nice teaser tail .. As you can tell this plug has been around .. I believe its worthy of its own thread .. Bob Hahn sharpies .. pleeeez help .
BigFish 05-01-2004, 10:04 AM I posted a thread a while back looking for information about Bob Hahn and many responded. In particular was Steve F. from Philly. Steve F./SFrances fame. I believe he was aquainted with him personally. Do the search I think you will find it! I got what is supposed to be an original Bob Hahn on e-bay a couple months ago (not sure if it really is) if you want to come by and take a look at it let me know, I am right in Abington.:D
BigFish 05-01-2004, 10:06 AM Yeah Tagger....do a search under "Hahn". It is there.;)
Tagger 05-01-2004, 10:20 AM Thanks Larry .. you got original Bob Hahn .. Lucky Duck
Tagger 05-01-2004, 10:46 AM OK did the search and got it on the copier.. geeeez I missed this thread completely.. good one.. must have been when I was on tour with Britney .. I don't want to make anybody chew there cabbage twice..But does anyone have dates he built .. He ever try going big time .. (Gibbs) Where is Bob Hahn now .. Stil fishing I hope .. thanks all ..
bassmaster 05-01-2004, 08:14 PM i dunno when he built But I use to Buy them in 200 dollar shots in falmouth.
I had a ton of them.
have some z lip swimmers a needle some small surfsters and a large surfster.
justplugit 05-01-2004, 09:20 PM Ya Bifish if ,the lure you got was on e-bay in a slim plastic package with a tan Hahn Lures paper stapled on the top of the plastic a couple of months ago,i believe it was an original Hahn. What was the final bid?
BigFish 05-02-2004, 07:57 AM No Justplugit, that must have been a different one....mine was purchased about two months ago. It is kind of a green Danny style swimmer, not in original packaging so I really have no documentation with it. However, the eyes on mine are the same as the ones on the plug Tagger has pictured.:) Mine cost me.....$15.00 I think it was? Which I think was pretty cheap.
capesams 05-02-2004, 10:40 AM Tagger............Trade bm a tadpole for b hahn, he's got a house full.
Tagger 05-02-2004, 11:15 AM :kewl: Yes !! CS he wants Tadpole for nothing. I would like to pry one Bob Hahn out of that cheap bastagde hands ..sweet talk ?
Slipknot 05-02-2004, 12:12 PM I have one of his Bob Hahn's:D and I also have a Tagger Tadpole :D

capesams 05-02-2004, 02:15 PM .
Tagger 05-02-2004, 03:00 PM that jointed bling bling will do..When I do a batch I 'll put one aside for CS... where u get the brass man ...home depot got that?
Tagger 05-02-2004, 03:19 PM This plug got some wicked vibes coming off it .. the curves are kicking .. I hope the knockoff has the same mojo .. I'm doing it up the same as orig in honor of Bob Hahn .. I have to get some #4 colorado's nickel over brass.. I need a 1/4" brad point .. His eyes look like they were done with a jacknife or do you think someone added the eyes ? I like how the eyes are down lower than the lip .
Tagger 05-02-2004, 03:24 PM This Old Plug......thanks Justplugit for the loaner.. I'll send u back a new knockoff with orig when I'm done molesting it ..
justplugit 05-02-2004, 06:14 PM Tagger-:humpty: those are the original Hahn eyes, and you are a very generous man. :D
capesams 05-02-2004, 08:13 PM .
bassmaster 05-02-2004, 08:17 PM Tagger i made some knock offs last year
If You want the action of that lure Your using the wrong wood.
You need Red not ayc.
I use to toss these up along the islands outa my GW and from shore.
the z lips are a better producer
the pike lip from NJ whats it #2 will do just fine.
Tagger 05-03-2004, 02:37 PM I got your knockoff in swap .. Newellys swims great .. I got red cedar ...weighs nothing .. I thought this was is so chewed up it looks like white cedar or even white pine .. I've heard Bob Hahns plugs were the best swimmers ever made but not consistent .. not my opion .. just what people are telling me .. was he consistent with the type wood he used .. and don't talk about it show me a pic .. your Bob Hahn stash ... yea .. you don't have any Bob Hahns really .. do ya...
:conf:
blackeye 05-03-2004, 02:42 PM no weight in that thing?
bassmaster 05-03-2004, 08:27 PM the little surfster is not a bob hans knock off Taggage
I had boxes of them along with one offs from gibbs when they was up the street from Me.
I think I may have 5 Bob Hans left
and one of His chitty needles, those sucked
justplugit 05-03-2004, 10:08 PM CS, if this trade between the Tadpole and Hahn should ever really take place, you would be the only one tough enough to assemble the negotiaing team, armed guards and armored guard trucks needed:)
Tagger 05-04-2004, 03:36 AM My target weight is 1.3 ounces.. with wood and 2/0 hooks (don't have 1/0 yet ) I'm at 1.1 ounces. add wire, lip ,finish ,swap 2/0 with 1/0 I think I'm going to nail this thing .. PMer who knew him very well and is holding 120 plugs told me he used white pine for all his stuff..
He was not really consistant in the wood he used or the Patterns they would vary all the time.He would use birch maple white pine an cedar. For the most part the paint would blow up as soon as they hit the water but that didn't matter to me the fish still liked them I did pretty good on a big Pikie he used to make I woke up the hole town of Monmouth Beach one night when I lost one on a good fish.(to lazy to retie)BM is right use a Z lip from njt. use one belly hook an make it out of red cedar Use a shot of lead just back of center an U will really have somethin.Big Don does a good job on followin in BOBs footprints. His needles where for Jersey fish when we had sandeels. His bottle plugs where the best.
He made that pattern Larger also I have one in a weird lime green that has taken alot of fish an is now set out to pasture.
blackeye 05-05-2004, 11:53 AM I made two copies and the envirotex is drying right now. One has a longer and shallower bevel on top-I had to experiment with the angles on my chop saw (no belt sander)-neither is weighted because I wanted to see how they swim without-and can add weights later if needed. I plan on swimming them this weekend-what is the action of an original Bob Hahn swimmer comparable to? Pikie or danny or p40?
thanx
chris
Tagger 05-14-2004, 09:40 PM I kinda over shot the runway on the weight.. Going to bend eye down on blue and put on 1/0 trebles .. 2/0 in pic ..
Tagger 05-14-2004, 09:41 PM After I get 1/0 hooks these go back to Justplugit
Tagger you dont have a glass needlefish yet do ya:rolleyes: :laughs:
great job!
blackeye 05-15-2004, 09:01 AM I swam one I made the other day and loved the action-I think I put the front hook too far forward-it is 1" from the nose-and it gets fouled with the line every other cast. I'm gonna get rid of the split rings on the hooks and see if that helps, if not I'll move the hook back a half inch. The two I made are 5" and everything else is eyeballed since all I had to go on was your pics. One white and one yellow flash
chris
Just use one belly hook.Tagger nice job.I like the ccbc eel color.
justplugit 05-15-2004, 05:07 PM Came out beautiful Tagger, looks like ya got it down perfect.:kewl:
What wood did you end up turning with?
Tagger 05-15-2004, 05:45 PM Dave I'm heavy with the AYC.. I'm going to lighten up a lttle with 40 yr old red cedar as suggested by other board members .. bm,nib..I bet these will swim good though ..but being that heavy there not Hahny ..
justplugit 05-15-2004, 06:12 PM Tagger ,they look as Hahny as Hahny can be!:D Soon you will be known as the" Hahnster"! :btu: :bl:
